10-Year Yield Retreat Puts 5% Mark in Spotlight

10-year Treasury yields are set for back-to-back weekly declines after rejecting 5.30%, with the 5.00% level now critical.

End-of-week bond market performance might surprise observers given the hotter-than-expected US CPI and PPI inflation data released earlier this week. One could almost suspect the opposite outcome, but that is not the case.

The 10-year Treasury yield has fallen to 5.09%, set for consecutive weekly drops for the first time since June. This development is noteworthy as yields retreat toward the 5.00% level anew amid a more cautious market mood.

The clear rejection at 5.30% this week after the CPI release saw yields unable to hold gains before a sharp pullback. Attention thus returns to the 5.00% level, which earlier in September acted as a cap preventing yields from moving higher.

A decisive daily close under 5.00% would therefore be needed to indicate a more substantial breakdown in the recent uptrend.

Following that, a decline toward 4.70% could materialize, with the 100-day moving average (red line) also around 4.73%. Lower still, the 200-day moving average (blue line) near 4.50% might become a target.

For the moment, caution is warranted. It may be premature to declare the end of the larger upward trend.

Yields have remained comfortably above the crucial 5.00% level in recent sessions. Any recovery toward 5.20% or 5.30% would challenge the recent rejection.

Fundamentally, little has altered. Inflationary pressures persist, and the same structural supports for yields that have been in place since last month remain. Large Treasury issuance and worries over US debt's long-term path are primary drivers of the higher compensation investors seek for holding long-term government bonds.

For now, focus returns to the 5.00% level as the key dividing line. Holding above would imply that upward pressure on yields persists. A break below, however, could transform this week's sharp pullback into a more significant move.
