AfD's strong state election performance brings its Bitcoin-friendly platform, including deregulation and strategic reserve plans, back into focus.
Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) secured 43.8% of the vote in the state election in Saxony-Anhalt on Sunday, marking its best regional performance. That outcome brings back scrutiny on how a larger AfD presence could shape Bitcoin (BTC) policy in the EU's biggest economy.
The AfD did not achieve an absolute majority in the 83-seat legislature, leaving coalition talks ahead. Nationally, the party leads opinion polls, which keeps its Bitcoin-friendly agenda on the radar.
The AfD has cast itself as the most crypto-friendly among Germany's major political parties. Its national platform demands "extensive deregulation" for bitcoin, wallets, and trading activities. The party contends that regulators have been too cautious, based on Reuters' review of its platform documents.
In October 2025, the AfD submitted a motion in the Bundestag arguing that the government had not strategically acknowledged Bitcoin as an asset suitable for inclusion in currency reserves during times of monetary uncertainty, and called it a possible reserve holding.

The AfD also objects to the ECB's planned digital currency, the digital euro. The party advocates for making cash a constitutionally guaranteed right, according to the same report.
In addition to deregulation, AfD legislators have pressed for looser Bitcoin rules under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework. MiCA serves as the bloc's licensing system for crypto companies.
They claim the framework was designed for centrally issued tokens, not decentralized ones such as Bitcoin. This perspective originates from the Bitcoin Bundesverband in Germany, an industry body that monitors the nation's crypto laws.
The German Finance Committee has already turned down a Greens proposal to eliminate a related tax exemption. That one-year holding period for bitcoin is the same provision the AfD aims to preserve.
The dispute over MiCA's scope goes beyond German borders. Poland has on three occasions failed to enact its own compliant legislation.
Despite Sunday's outcome, the AfD's cryptocurrency agenda confronts the same barriers as its overall platform. Mainstream German parties continue to reject coalition with the far-right at the national level. As a result, the party's bitcoin ideas remain a subject of discussion rather than enacted legislation.
