Behind the Hype: AI Agent Payments in 2026

A BeInCrypto report reveals over 90% of AI agent payments are under a penny, with Solana dominating 99% of transactions.

AI agents are currently a hot topic across technology, finance, and media. Within finance, agentic payments are seen as potentially as disruptive as contactless payments. However, the headline numbers may not tell the full story. BeInCrypto's report, The State of AI Agent Payments 2026, investigates that question.

From late July through August 2026, payments data on x402, a widely used open-source protocol for AI agents, was monitored. According to BeInCrypto, 6.4 million payments recorded during that period totaled under $120,000. Over 90% of those agentic payments were valued at less than a penny.

What Do AI Agents Buy With Cents?

Examining the x402 catalogue sheds light on what agents buy. The most frequently used paid item was a cryptocurrency safety check generated by AI, priced at two cents per query. Web searches were the second most common.

The agents were purchasing information required to finish a task, paying for each request individually.

Consider an AI assistant that helps you organize a vacation. It might spend a tiny fee to look up flight options, and then pay to find details about your destination online.

Both flight availability checks and paid web searches were seen in the catalogue. Such purchases provide the assistant with the data required to respond to your query.

Solana handled 99.2% of the transactions in the dataset. The activity was highly concentrated: a spike over eight days on Solana represented 94.5% of all recorded payments.

This concentration is significant. A limited set of active wallets can generate millions of transfers, so transaction volumes do not accurately reflect how many businesses rely on the technology.

How Prepared Are Agents for Larger Sums?

Micropayments achieved a score of 60.7 out of 100, the top in our provisional readiness assessment. Trading and investment agents received 39.1, and institutional workflows scored 12.

These figures are based on the evidence currently available. They do not represent success rates.

Among the twelve institutional workflows examined, six were capable of initiating or settling payments within human-set permissions. However, evidence of actual usage was scarce.

The sum of money placed under software control also alters the level of risk.

“If an agent is responsible for $10, you can worry less about its spending than if it is responsible for $1,000,” said Will Papper, Director of Product for Agent Payments, Cloudflare
