Bitcoin's value declined on Wednesday following the release of data indicating that U.S. consumer prices increased more than anticipated in September, driven by higher gasoline costs.

The largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization traded near $82,827 after falling almost 1% in the past 24 hours. Earlier Wednesday in New York, it dipped to approximately $82,331.

Bitcoin has lost more than 1% over the last week. Its price experienced its strongest quarter in years following rallies in August and September, prompting numerous analysts to say it had emerged from a bear market.

However, persistent inflation continues to put pressure on the digital asset in the near term.

Wednesday's data indicated the Consumer Price Index increased 0.6% in September, following a 0.4% rise in August.

According to the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics, the CPI advanced 3.7% in the 12 months through September, after rising 3.4% in August.

Elevated U.S. prices, partly driven by the Trump Administration's decision to attack Iran alongside Israel this year, have caused the Federal Reserve to suggest it might maintain interest rates at higher levels for an extended period.

In September, the central bank stated that reducing inflation was its top priority and raised interest rates.

Historically, bitcoin's price has been responsive to interest rate increases, as higher borrowing costs limit the liquidity required for the digital coin to operate, similar to other risk-on assets such as stocks.

Nevertheless, bitcoin's price increased in September even as the Federal Reserve took a strong stance on inflation.

The central bank is scheduled to announce its interest rate decision on October 28. As of Wednesday, fed funds futures indicated a 47% probability of a rate increase at the Fed's October meeting, based on CME Group's FedWatch tool.
