Bitcoin Falls to $80,979 After Hot CPI Print; Whale Holdings Under Scrutiny

Bitcoin dropped 3.3% to $80,979 after US inflation topped forecasts, pushing price below ETF cost basis. Whales had accumulated to 3.03M BTC before the report.

Bitcoin (BTC) shed 3.3% in a 24-hour window, falling to $80,979 after a US inflation reading came in above forecasts. The decline brought the cryptocurrency below the average purchase price of US spot ETFs.

In the weeks ahead of the inflation data, large holders had accumulated their positions to near one-year highs. Now that prices have come under pressure, the question is whether those whales will maintain their holdings or begin selling.

US Inflation Surprise Drives Bitcoin Below ETF Cost Basis

Annual inflation in the US accelerated to 3.7% in September, exceeding the 3.6% that had been anticipated. Core inflation also surpassed estimates, reaching 2.6% versus a forecast of 2.5%.

Within minutes of the data release, Bitcoin dropped and continued to decline. Leveraged traders also incurred steep losses, as crypto liquidations approached $1 billion over the 24 hours ending early Thursday. Long positions made up 91.6% of those liquidations.

The decline pushed Bitcoin under the average cost basis of US spot ETFs, which Glassnode places near $81,500. On the same day, those ETFs saw net outflows of $261.5 million, according to SoSoValue data.

Whale Accumulation Preceded the CPI Release

According to CryptoQuant data, large holders began accumulating weeks before the inflation report, switching from distribution. Their balances outside exchanges and mining pools hit 3.03 million BTC, the highest level since November 2025.

In a report dated October 13, CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju commented on this shift.

“The question is who is buying. Whales have switched from selling to accumulating… That is how early bull markets start, with retail still absent,” he said.

Broader market demand also shifted positive. Analyst Darkfost pegged combined spot and futures demand over 30 days at 69,000 BTC.

Spot demand is starting to improve and is adding to futures demand, which keeps growing.

Bitcoin is once again entering a regime, as it did in August, where spot and futures are growing together.

Total demand is estimated at +69 000 BTC after two rather negative months.

Glassnode, however, identifies minimal fresh demand supporting the price, pointing to ETF outflows and supply overhead. Buyers over the last two years have cost bases ranging from roughly $88,000 to $100,000, and these levels have twice reversed price advances this year.

Social Sentiment Turned Negative as Analyst Optimism Rose

Public sentiment had already shifted to fear ahead of the CPI data. On October 13, Santiment recorded only 0.82 bullish Bitcoin comments for each bearish one across X, Reddit, and Telegram.

Santiment linked the negative mood to multiple rejections around $87,000, a subsequent fall toward $81,000, and substantial long liquidations. However, analysts monitored by CryptoQuant interpreted the market differently.

CryptoQuant's consensus index reached +49.2 on October 14, with 84% of 164 surveyed analysts taking a bullish stance on Bitcoin. The index had remained below zero until late July.

Buy Orders Accumulate Near $80,000 Level

Which view proves accurate will become apparent from Bitcoin's behavior around immediate support and resistance. Below the ETF cost basis, Glassnode identifies $80,000 as the location of the largest bid block on Binance's spot order book. CryptoQuant notes that Bitcoin's 365-day moving average is also near that level.

A breakdown below could trigger selling from leveraged long positions clustered just under $80,000, according to Glassnode. That would bring the True Market Mean — the average cost for active investors — into focus around $78,000.

On the upside, $88,000 represents both the cost basis for buyers who purchased six to twelve months ago and a cluster of short liquidations. Glassnode indicated that a daily close above $88,000, combined with a resumption of ETF inflows, would suggest buyers are absorbing that supply.

Until Bitcoin moves decisively beyond one of these thresholds, whether whales will hold onto the coins they accumulated remains an open question.
