Bitcoin's price swung after the Fed raised rates for the first time since 2023, eventually settling near $75,813.
After the Federal Reserve raised interest rates for the first time since 2023, bitcoin's price fluctuated before ending the 24-hour period roughly flat, as was widely anticipated.
The top digital asset stood at roughly $75,813, having fallen to a low of $75,355 in the hour following the Fed's announcement that it would raise the federal funds rate to between 3.75% and 4%.
Bitcoin has lost nearly 4% over the past seven days.
With traders assigning a greater than 90% probability to a rate hike before the Fed's September meeting, most significant bitcoin trading activity probably occurred prior to Wednesday.
Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, speaking to journalists on Wednesday, offered little insight into the central bank's future policy, but emphasized that price stability in the United States remains its top priority.
"The decision we made today was a sober decision, serious decision, responsible decision, one that we have been preparing for and thinking about in my 110 or 120 days here," Warsh said.
He added: "The plain fact is that inflation is too high, and has been for too long. This summer's inflation readings do not tell me that underlying trends have meaningfully improved."
Wash, who has previously spoken positively about bitcoin, stated last month during his initial significant address as Fed chief that inflation was unacceptably high and needed to be reduced.
The Fed chair appears to be defying President Donald Trump's expectations, as Trump has consistently demanded lower rates and has even threatened to dismiss the former Fed chair for not complying.
In a post on Truth Social last week, Trump wrote: "We should have the LOWEST RATE of any country in the World, like 'the old days.'"
Asked by reporters what he would tell the president, Wash responded: "I've got nothing for you on a discussion with the president."
Bitcoin generally performs well when interest rates are low because more liquidity is available for purchasing the asset.
The United States is experiencing an affordability crisis, with conflict in the Middle East driving up oil prices and further exacerbating the situation as the cost of daily goods in the world's biggest economy increases.
