Bitcoin little changed as it returns to key moving-average crossroads

Bitcoin holds near $82,500 at its converged 100- and 200-hour moving averages after a week of failed breakouts.

Bitcoin has spent the opening days of the week swinging across its 100-hour and 200-hour moving averages, which have nearly merged around $82,500. Every small advance above those lines gave buyers a chance to seize control, but on each occasion the sellers fought back. The market then fell away from the averages, yet support halted the slide just as resistance had halted the rallies. In keeping with that pattern, the price climbed once more.

That leaves the market at the same junction as before, with the price once again sitting on the converged averages near $82,500 and traders weighing the significance of both the 100-hour and 200-hour lines.

Missed opportunities defined the week

Bitcoin began the week trading above the 100-hour moving average and pressing against the higher 200-hour moving average. A Monday advance briefly moved beyond that level, but the run topped out at $84,178. Momentum faded, the price turned back down through the 100-hour average, and the decline carried toward the $80,106–$81,183 swing support zone.

Tuesday's dip into that region drew buying interest and set up another attempt higher. The bounce lifted bitcoin back over both averages, tilting the near-term picture in favour of the bulls. But that advance, too, fell short of the $84,178 high set on Monday.

Buyers got their chance, and they failed to complete the task.

That missed opportunity kept sellers in the game, and they pressed the market down. Wednesday saw a move under the then-converged averages near $83,100, with the selling gathering pace. By Thursday, the price had dropped through the lower boundary of the $80,106–$81,183 swing zone.

A deeper decline looked like the natural next step. In practice, the breakdown lost momentum almost immediately, and bitcoin rebounded back above the support area.

The sellers had their moment, and they, too, came up short.

The price returns to the moving-average crossroads

The rebound has carried bitcoin to the converged 100-hour and 200-hour moving averages near $82,500 once again. Those levels are under test now, and any move from here will require confirmation.

To take control, buyers need to climb above those averages and remain there. A durable breakout would turn the short-term bias upward and set up these objectives:

  • $84,178 — the Monday high that buyers could not breach this week.

  • $85,578–$87,374 — the upper resistance band that encompasses the cycle highs of September and October.

To keep control, sellers have to hold the price below the moving averages. If they manage that and drive the market down, attention shifts back to:

  • $81,183–$80,106 — the swing support zone that has shaped this week's price action.

  • $76,052 — the 38.2% retracement of the climb from July's low to September's high, if support fails and sellers hold the move lower.

What this week shows: a break needs staying power

The week serves as a reminder that crossing a technical level is merely the opening move. The follow-through after the break decides the outcome.

Buyers pushed above the averages yet never took out the week's high. Sellers pushed below the support zone but could not keep prices depressed. On both sides, the failed move produced a reversal.

Bitcoin now sits at the junction once again. A move above $82,500 that holds would give buyers a fresh chance to take charge. If the price stays below that mark, sellers keep the upper hand at resistance.

Those levels set the risk for either side. The next push and whether it holds will reveal who is in charge.
