Since AI coding agents became mainstream, Breez, a bitcoin software firm, has seen a surge in demand for its developer tools. Partnership inquiries have risen roughly 14-fold as developers and the coding agents they deploy seek to add bitcoin payments to their applications.
The surge was directly linked to Anthropic's Claude Code in a company blog post. That product debuted as a research preview in February 2025 and reached general availability three months later.
According to Breez, before 2025 most potential partners came from three groups: dedicated bitcoin enthusiasts, cryptocurrency developers, and fintech companies viewing bitcoin as an asset class.
The company reported receiving inquiries from many developers with little or no bitcoin experience after Claude Code's release. Requests arrived from fitness apps, messaging platforms aiming to let users transfer money between themselves, a travel eSIM provider, and the creators of a mushroom-identification application.
Breez noted that many of these developers choose bitcoin because of its speed. Establishing traditional payment acceptance, which involves opening a bank account and handling cross-border transfers, can require weeks or months, whereas the company claims its SDK can be operational in minutes.
An increasing proportion of inquiries now originate from software rather than humans, Breez stated. The firm said it frequently receives requests from coding agents that communicate on behalf of the companies using them.
Agents prefer bitcoin because it is permissionless, the company contends. An agent can develop an application and establish payments for global users without needing a bank account, completing onboarding checks, or signing documents.
“Bitcoin is agnostic about whether the code of its current owner and user is composed of DNA base pairs or weights in a neural net,” Breez wrote.
That lack of gatekeeping has historically attracted attention from financial regulators, who mandate that traditional payment providers verify their customers.
The company stated that its latest SDK implementation, which is based on the Bitcoin scaling protocol Spark, managed the additional volume without any issues.
Breez presented the change as an update to investor Marc Andreessen's 2011 essay, which posited that software is eating the world, now asserting that AI is eating software. The company likened Bitcoin's function to underlying infrastructure such as electrical outlets and submarine cables.
