Chainalysis: US Turns Net Bitcoin Importer While the World Buys Dollar Stablecoins

A Chainalysis report shows the US became a net importer of Bitcoin in 2026, the first time since 2022, while global users favored dollar stablecoins.

Chainalysis data shows the US has become a net importer of Bitcoin in 2026 for the first time since 2022, stockpiling BTC while demand elsewhere runs toward dollar stablecoins.

The 2026 Geography of Crypto report spans the 12 months ending July 1. Chainalysis links the divide to demand: Americans already hold dollars, and users abroad want those dollars without a US bank account.

Why Is the US Stockpiling Bitcoin While the World Wants Dollars?

Chainalysis combined on-chain service inflows, order book volume and cross-border positioning into a single Bitcoin index. The US scored 0.96 in 2026 versus 0.52 for the rest of the world, a margin of 0.44 that stood at 0.09 in 2024.

The stablecoin index points the other way. The rest of the world posted 1.00, the US 0.56, a deficit of 0.44 that was 0.05 in 2024.

Americans, in the meantime, view Bitcoin as a scarce store of value. That demand was described to Chainalysis by Will Su, Managing Director and Head of Digital Assets Research at BlackRock.

ā€œInvestor interest in bitcoin as a monetary alternative remains strong, particularly as government debt and spending reach new highs globally.ā€

The transaction data fits that pattern. Each period saw net outflows from the US in transfers under $10,000, while transfers above $10 million alone brought in 53,200 BTC. Chainalysis sees this as retail sending Bitcoin out and institutions pulling it in.

Which Shift Will Last Longer?

Bitcoin accumulation, according to Chainalysis, hinges on institutional allocation decisions, and those decisions move with market sentiment. Once people have adopted digital dollars, the firm contends, they are unlikely to turn back.

Dollar-pegged tokens represent 99.1% of stablecoin volume on exchange order books. Euro-backed tokens account for 0.45% even though the European Union has Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) rules for stablecoin issuers.

With stablecoin reserves held mostly in short-dated US government debt, foreign appetite for digital dollars turns into appetite for Treasuries. The same pattern appears in tokenized Treasury demand, where Italy, Portugal and Singapore each hold more value than US holders.

Stablecoin licensing frameworks have been introduced in Singapore and Hong Kong, but Chainalysis says regulation has outrun user adoption.
