Chelsea Fill Four-Year Shirt Sponsor Gap With Stablecoin Firm Circle

Stablecoin firm Circle will appear on Chelsea’s shirts for one season, ending a four-year sponsorship gap. The logo debuts Sunday against Brighton.

Chelsea’s shirt front is being sponsored for the first time in four years, with Circle, the American company behind the USDC stablecoin, as the buyer.

The contract covers a single season, and the badge will be seen for the first time on Sunday at home against Brighton.

Chelsea’s Shirt Value Has Dropped by a Third

Chelsea’s previous major shirt deal, with phone network Three UK, came to an end in 2023. The club had been sold by Roman Abramovich while UK sanctions were in force. A US consortium led by Todd Boehly took over.

Interim arrangements followed, beginning with Infinite Athlete, a US technology firm, and then Damac, a developer from Dubai.

No rival club endured a longer stretch with an unsponsored shirt.

Christian Purslow, formerly Chelsea’s head of global commercial activities, said: “It is intriguing, mystifying, bloody unbelievable, to be perfectly frank, that Chelsea are starting another season without a shirt sponsor. Not because there aren’t brands that would go on the Chelsea…”

The valuation continued to slide; in June, The Sponsor, an industry tracker, cut Chelsea’s shirt value by £16.7 million, to £33.6 million. The damage was down to missing out on European football. Liverpool’s shirt, by comparison, was valued at £61 million.

Chelsea continues to say the Circle deal matches its market rate. Market estimates put that rate near £50 million a season.

Why a Regulated Coin Landed on the Shirt

USDC ranks as the sixth-largest crypto asset, worth roughly $73.6 billion. Circle’s pitch is based on trust rather than technology. In July 2024, it won a French e-money license, becoming the first major stablecoin issuer cleared under the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) rules.

Timing helps as well, arriving just months after the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) warned Premier League clubs about unauthorised finance sponsors.

“Millions of football fans trust their club’s badge. Clubs should not let unauthorised financial firms exploit that loyalty by putting potentially dodgy products in front of millions of fans,” said Lucy Castledine, Director of Consumer Investments at the FCA, in a statement.

The UK’s own stablecoin rules are due later. Issuers come under full FCA oversight in October 2027. This sponsorship is set to finish five months earlier than that.

Circle gains Premier League exposure, and an opening, before the rules land.
