American borrowers can now secure mortgages using Bitcoin as collateral, offered jointly by Coinbase and Better Mortgage, a Nasdaq-listed lender.

The two firms stated on Wednesday that the mortgage program adheres to the standards of the Federal National Mortgage Association, or Fannie Mae.

The first such loan was funded in June, the companies said. The service now aims to attract younger would-be homeowners who hold Bitcoin.

“Borrowers in the US can now use Bitcoin as collateral for a down payment – without having to sell it or face margin calls.”

According to Better Mortgage CTO Ziggy Jonsson, “In 2025, high interest rates, record home prices, and limited inventory pushed the median age of a first-time homebuyer to 40.”

Jonsson added: “Coinbase counts millions of monthly users worldwide, and by allowing Coinbase One members to pledge crypto as collateral without selling their holdings, we’re opening a new path toward homeownership for a generation of borrowers whose wealth increasingly lives onchain.”

Ben Shen, Coinbase's head of financial services and loyalty products, commented: “By enabling borrowers to pledge their digital assets in the mortgage underwriting process, we are allowing crypto to be more useful and powerful in the real-world — expanding the pathways to homeownership while preserving long-term investment positions.”

Coinbase One subscribers qualify for a rebate of 1% of the mortgage amount, capped at $10,000, according to the announcement.

The first mortgage was closed in June for a married couple, Joe and Amy, from Michigan. Rather than selling their Bitcoin, the pair used it as collateral for their down payment, the firms said.

Crypto mortgage provider Milo reported earlier this year that it had exceeded $100 million in digital-asset-backed mortgages, with one loan reaching a record $12 million. The growth came as more wealthy and institutional borrowers turned to Bitcoin as collateral for home loans.

While Bitcoin-backed lending remains a niche market, Ledn, a major player in the sector, has published research forecasting the market could expand from $3 billion to $1 trillion over the next decade.
