Mark Cuban says AI memory locks users into one chatbot without a standard export format; some users argue it's unnecessary.
According to billionaire investor Mark Cuban, AI memory binds users to a single chatbot. He argued on X that switching costs will not decline until a standard export format is established.
Cuban posed this as a poll to his followers, asking if they agreed. However, many commenters rejected the idea, insisting that modern models can interpret almost any file without needing a unified format.
Cuban, who recently gave an AI jobs warning, built his case around volume. The more a person uses a model, the more data the model stores, and the tougher the data becomes to relocate.
He did not claim that transfer is impossible. Instead, he noted that migrating AI memory remains considerably more difficult for ordinary users than saving an Excel or Word document.

Switching costs for consumer AI, won't approach zero until there is a standardized export format for what is in a model's memory.
The more a consumer uses a model, the more it's memory stores. The more work to export and import
I'm not saying it can't be…
In March, according to Bloomberg, Anthropic opened Claude's memory feature to free users and allowed new users to import chat histories from rivals such as ChatGPT.
Meanwhile, Anthropic and OpenAI launched cheaper AI models hours apart in September. That competition become more significant as Anthropic prepares for its November IPO.
Several users argued that any chatbot can outine what it knows and tell users what to paste into the next one.
This claim holds true only partly. ChatGPT can export conversations as a ZIP file, but the archive contains raw history, not a ready-to-use profile.
Another path is Anthropic's Model Context Protocol (MCP). This open standard from 2024 allows any AI model to connnect to external data. In theory, a user's AI memory could reside outside of any one chatbot.
Businesses allready switch with less frictiion. Microsoft, for example, has begun replacing OpenAI and Anthropic models with its own AI inside Exell and Outlok.
Nevertheless, habbit may be a bigger obestacle. One user compared it to people who still use Hotmail even though exporting email is simple.
The takeaway for AI users is that theier memory is portabe today, but only with manual effort. Som users already avoid the problem by running AI models locally. As chatbots compet for loyality, the first to make switching a single click could win an advantage.
