Vitalik Buterin published an updated EIP-8141 for the Hegotá Ethereum upgrade, proposing changes to wallet transactions, gas fees, and security.
Vitalik Buterin released a revised Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 8141 on Sunday. The proposal is set for Hegotá, the upcoming Ethereum upgrade, and it reworks wallet signing, batching, and payment processes.
The framework assesses whether privacy tools can operate within Ethereum rather than being external to it.
Currently, a single Ethereum transaction performs only one action. It either transfers funds or approves a token, and nothing more.
Frame transactions alter this. A single transaction can contain up to 64 steps in a predetermined sequence. If any individual step fails, the whole batch fails.
This all-or-nothing approach eliminates a common failure scenario, where an approval succeeds but the subsequent swap does not.
Consequently, approving a token and swapping it becomes a single click rather than two. Wallets can also incorporate an entire onboarding process into one confirmation. Buterin had previously introduced much of this reasoning in March, when he proposed a broader revamp of Ethereum wallets.
The first change addresses seed phrases. Currently, losing a 12-word backup results in lost funds. EIP-8141 separates an account from its original key.
Wallets can then rotate keys or restore access via a second device or a trusted contact. The private key remains, but users no longer need to carry it on paper.
The second change focuses on gas fees. Paymasters allow any application to cover a user's transaction fee, enabling newcomers to transact before purchasing Ethereum. Apps treat this as a customer acquisition cost.
The third change addresses signatures. The proposal includes P256, the system used by passkeys and phone security chips. The authors describe this as a step toward post-quantum cryptography rather than a complete quantum solution, a concept Buterin outlined in his lean Ethereum roadmap proposal in July.
One positive consequence of all the recent detailed thinking about transaction formats – not just 8141, also "future of state" discussions eg. UTXOs, PBT, keyed nonces, and also recursive STARK mempool – is that we have a much more explicit understanding of how transactions have…

Scalability is the larger objective. Buterin is targeting a more Bitcoin-inspired Ethereum design, where simple and predictable transactions carry the lowest gas fees.
Ethereum (ETH) traded around $2,512 on Sunday, up approximately 49% over the past 90 days.
Client teams have not established an activation date, and the Glamsterdam gas limit increase will come first in Q4 2026.
