The $6.15 Billion Binance Heist: How It Unfolded
An attacker stole about $6.15 billion from Binance on October 29 in 31 minutes; BitOK's tracing shows $2.79 billion was frozen, burned or seized.
Ethereum dropped sharply after a Binance hack saw $6.3 billion stolen, prompting a broad market risk-off move.
Following news of a security breach at Binance, Ethereum fell sharply yesterday. Approximately $6.3 billion was reportedly drained from wallets across several blockchains in what was the largest cryptocurrency heist on record.
The breach sparked worries about exchange security and the risk of contagion spreading through the crypto ecosystem. Binance promised to make customers whole, but doubts over the stolen funds and possible forced selling depressed confidence.
About $1.53 billion worth of leveraged positions were liquidated in a 24-hour span. The Binance hack set off the initial jolt, but leveraged bets and cascading forced sales amplified the damage.
In the past, crypto selloffs set off by exchange hacks have usually been followed by a bounce-back, though the speed depended on the economic backdrop. The initial move is typically powered by fear, confusion and compulsory liquidations, not by a weakening of crypto fundamentals.
The broader environment remains mostly negative because of inflation worries, growth fears, a risk-off mood, impending interest-rate increases and geopolitical strains. A meaningful shift in risk appetite may be required to reverse the current trajectory. Potential triggers include an advance in US-Iran talks or accommodative remarks from the Fed.
Ethereum retested the breached support at 2,360 and then fell to fresh lows. Sellers are expected to keep aiming for the 1,900 mark. Should a pullback happen beforehand, sellers are likely to use the descending trendline—with risk defined above it—to drive further declines. Buyers, meanwhile, would want the price to climb above that trendline, which could pave the way for new highs and a run toward the 3,400 resistance level.
The price has dipped beneath the slight upward trendline that marked the recent rebound. This timeframe offers limited insight, so a closer view is necessary.
There is a minor resistance area near 2,280 where the price has been rejected several times in recent days. If it reaches that level, sellers are anticipated to intervene, with risk defined above resistance, to continue aiming for 1,900. Buyers, by contrast, would need the price to move higher, extending the pullback toward the downward trendline.
This week ends with the US Employment Cost Index.
