Crude futures recover after earlier decline, reclaim $93.48
Crude oil futures rebounded after slipping to $91.70, reclaiming $93.48. The next upside target is yesterday's high at $94.36.
Gold futures near $4,215; a swing trade plan details four buy entries, a stop, and four targets, with a blended 4.27:1 reward-to-risk.
Gold futures swing trade idea: A patient buy ladder with four upside targets
Gold futures (GC/MGC) | October 12, 2026 | Multi-week swing trade
In the October 12 snapshot, gold futures are hovering near $4,215, having pulled back substantially from the late-August peaks around $4,755. While a bullish reversal has yet to be confirmed, buyers seem to be holding the broader $4,100 to $4,160 zone. Rather than chasing the rebound, my preferred tactic is to await lower prices and accumulate a position gradually.
The plan calls for four potential buy entries, a defined protective stop, and four profit targets. Larger allocations are earmarked for deeper pullbacks, though some orders may never fill.
Swing trade at a glance
Weighted-average entry: $4,172.98Assumes all four orders fill.Protective stop: $4,126.60Trade exit level, not proof that the wider support region has failed.Blended reward-to-risk: 4.27:13 / 3 / 3 / 1 target allocation.Planned gross risk: $4,638Ten Micro Gold contracts; excludes commissions, slippage and gaps.Building the position: Four buy orders
Instead of entering the full position near $4,215, the suggested strategy spreads 10 Micro Gold futures contracts (MGC) across four lower prices. Combined, they match the exposure of one standard GC contract. The bars represent each order's share of the entire position, not a prediction for gold prices.
Buy 1 | $4,198.60 1 micro contract (10%)Buy 2 | $4,194.50 2 micro contracts (20%)Buy 3 | $4,169.80 3 micro contracts (30%)Buy 4 | $4,158.20 4 micro contracts (40%)Full-position weighted-average entry: $4,172.98A shallow correction results in only limited exposure, whereas a deeper pullback enables a larger position at more favorable prices. Yet a lower average does not inherently make the trade safer. Declining prices could also signal strengthening selling pressure. Alternatively, gold might bounce without reaching the lower orders, leaving a smaller position with a different average entry and risk profile.
Four upside targets for a possible gold recovery
Profit targets and reward-to-risk
TP1: $4,257 | 1.81:1An initial recovery objective and opportunity to consider partial profits.TP2: $4,338 | 3.56:1A more meaningful repair of the bearish structure.TP3: $4,425 | 5.43:1A stronger recovery supporting improving bullish momentum.TP4, runner: $4,648 | 10.24:1An ambitious move toward the region of the preceding highs. These reward-to-risk ratios assume all ten entries are filled and use the resulting weighted-average entry. An equal 25% allocation to the four targets would produce approximately 5.26:1. But ten contracts cannot be split evenly across four targets in whole contracts. A practical alternative is to exit three at TP1, three at TP2, three at TP3 and one at TP4. That yields a blended 4.27:1.
Potential gross profit by target
The following bar comparison illustrates profit contributions for the 3 / 3 / 3 / 1 exits if all entry orders fill and every exit order executes as planned. Amounts are in U.S. dollars and exclude transaction costs.
TP1 (3 contracts): $2,520.60TP2 (3 contracts): $4,950.60TP3 (3 contracts): $7,560.60TP4 (1 contract): $4,750.20Illustrative financial outcomes
Potential total gross profit: $19,782Only if all four targets are realized at their planned prices.Planned total gross loss: -$4,638If all ten contracts fill and the stop executes at its stated price.Blended reward-to-risk: 4.27:1A payoff ratio, not a success probability or expected return.Trade management after the first profit target
The initial stop at $4,126.60 sits $46.38 below the full-position average entry. If gold hits TP1 at $4,257, I would consider trimming exposure and moving the remaining stop toward the actual weighted-average entry, depending on which orders filled and the current price structure. At TP2, safeguarding accumulated gains becomes more critical if a smaller runner remains.
Shifting a stop toward entry does not ensure a breakeven result. Gold futures can move quickly, and execution prices, fees and gaps all influence outcomes.
What would strengthen or weaken this gold recovery?
Scenarios to watch
Recovery gaining credibility: Buyers defend the intended entriesHigher lows and a sustained move toward $4,257 and $4,338 would support an improving recovery, although the four-hour trend still needs confirmation. The trade thesis deteriorates: Selling continues through the buy areaFilling more lower entries could reflect weakening support. $4,126.60 is the planned trade stop even though it sits within the wider $4,100 to $4,160 region. The market rallies without us: Some buy orders never fillA missed entry is not a reason to chase price or assume that the original full-position calculations still apply. Why patience matters for this multi-week gold trade
The targets demand progressively greater improvement in the price structure, particularly the ambitious final runner at $4,648. Meanwhile, upcoming U.S. inflation figures could influence Treasury yields, the dollar and gold futures, producing further volatility before a sustainable recovery develops.
There are two distinct questions: Can gold stabilize sufficiently for a patient entry? And can it then recover far enough to reach the distant targets? The first does not establish the second.
For me, the attraction is the combination of selective entries, measured exposure and several opportunities to take profits, not a certainty that gold will revisit $4,648. I would rather miss the first leg of a rally than abandon the entry plan because price moves higher without me.
What I'm also watching:
while bullion is attempting to gain traction, Eamonn at investingLive.com highlighted that gold's move higher in Asia on the Russia-Ukraine energy truce narrative rests on very shaky support, especially with Kyiv reporting fresh infrastructure strikes within hours and the core macro focus remaining tied to crude prices ahead of Wednesday's US CPI.
From a technical standpoint, as Justin from investingLive.com noted, gold buyers eyeing a decisive $4,200 breakout still face major hurdles around $4,220 and $4,256, meaning upside momentum will need sustained order flow and a clear reclaim of overhead resistance to confirm a lasting recovery.
