Gold slips to key hourly moving averages; sellers press for control

Gold slipped toward its hourly moving averages after fading from a session high, with sellers making headway but key support still intact.

12/10/2026 15:0314 min read

Gold turned lower after peaking at $4,217.19, shy of the $4,226.83 high posted on October 2. It then dropped to $4,154.79 and now sits near $4,167, a decline of $27.50, or 0.65%.

News that Kazakhstan has started selling gold is drawing attention, and the firmer Treasury-yield backdrop is also cited as a headwind. In a twist, the US Treasury market is shut for the Columbus Day holiday, so pinning today's decline on yields is a bit of a stretch.

Even so, gold pays no interest. When Treasury yields rise, holding government debt becomes more rewarding, pushing up the opportunity cost of owning the metal. Demand can suffer as a result, though the relationship is not consistent day to day.

Keeping the Kazakhstan headline in perspective

The World Gold Council's September report put gold at roughly 75% of Kazakhstan's reserves and showed the country had built up 29 tonnes by July. With such a heavy concentration in one asset, some diversification would make sense. That could explain things, but it is not confirmation that current sales are happening for that reason.

A single country's sales do not signal a wider shift among central banks. The scale, timing and purpose of those sales are what matter.

My view? The headline is just one more ingredient in the pricing mix. It may encourage short-term selling, but I would stop short of calling it a game changer on its own.

The story draws attention. The technicals set up the next test.

The day's peak came in below the October high. Buyers made a run at that level but could not finish the job before the turn lower, handing sellers an early win.

The pullback has put two important technical levels on the radar:

  • 200-hour moving average at $4,167.60
  • 100-hour moving average at $4,152.92

Around $4,167, the metal is holding under the 200-hour average but still above the 100-hour average. The day's low at $4,154.79 also stopped just above that lower line.

That distinction is important. Sellers have gained ground, but the job is only partly done.

Moving averages are reference points for judging who controls price and for defining risk. They are not a promise that support will hold. The value is in watching how price behaves around them.

What would strengthen the bear case?

For sellers, remaining below the 200-hour moving average would keep the immediate pressure on. The next stage would be a break under the 100-hour moving average at $4,152.92.

Going below both and staying below would tip the technical bias further to the downside.

A quick slip through support and a fast rebound would be less persuasive. Traders need to see follow-through: does price stay beneath the broken level, and do bounces meet selling there?

What would give buyers another opening?

For buyers, defending the 100-hour moving average comes first. Next comes reclaiming the 200-hour moving average at $4,167.60 and staying above it.

Success there would point to fading selling pressure and give buyers a chance to aim back at today's high of $4,217.19, then the October high at $4,226.83.

Holding support is one thing. Taking back the higher average would do more for the bullish side.

Holiday conditions call for a different lens

The US bond market is closed in observance of Columbus Day.

Participation on holidays can be thin, so a headline may move price more than it would in a fuller session. That is a possibility, not proof that today's reaction is overstated.

For traders, the takeaway is to respect the news while checking whether the market can carry the move through a meaningful technical level.

News may provide the push, and that push could be magnified today. Technicals help determine whether buyers or sellers are in charge and give a level for setting and limiting risk.

Gold's next battle is straightforward: $4,152.92 below and $4,167.60 above. Watch which level gives way, whether price stays there, and whether momentum confirms the move.
