iPhone Duo Pre-Orders Sell Out in Minutes, Locking Out Holiday Shoppers

Apple's iPhone Duo sold out minutes after pre-orders opened on Oct 16, with new orders now shipping in late January.

Within minutes of going live on October 16, pre-orders for Apple's foldable iPhone Duo were exhausted, and the $1,999 model bought online will not arrive in time for Christmas.

Holiday shoppers now have limited choices. Apple's US online store shows all variants shipping in late January.

Supply Falls Short as iPhone Duo Pre-Orders Surge

John Ternus, Apple's CEO who succeeded Tim Cook on September 1, kicked off sales with a brief teaser video posted on X.

Minutes later, Executive Chairman Tim Cook posted a message directing customers to the October 23 launch.

Pre-orders began at 5 a.m. PT and sold out in a matter of minutes, according to Yahoo. The most expensive configuration, at $3,199, is listed for shipment on January 22.

In a statement, Apple described pre-order demand as "nothing short of extraordinary," CNBC reported. The company also said it will continue taking online orders.

Supply constraints were apparent even prior to the launch. Apple is paying Samsung roughly $250 per folding display under an exclusive supply agreement, with no alternative source.

The device was introduced during Ternus's debut keynote as CEO on September 9. It features a 5.4-inch outer screen and a 7.6-inch matte inner display.

Store Pickup May Be Last Chance for Holiday Delivery

Online purchasers have slim prospects for December delivery. However, a couple of possibilities for getting a gift before the holidays are still open.

First, Apple retail locations start selling the iPhone Duo on October 23, and some might have units available for walk-ins. Inventory will likely be extremely limited, and Apple has not confirmed this, MacRumors reports.

Second, from October 24, customers can attempt to reserve a unit for in-store pickup via Apple's website, which says it will refresh availability then. That could indicate new inventory arriving at stores.

Finally, Apple might clear the order backlog faster than its current estimates indicate. Still, no December delivery is assured.

A failure to deliver by the holidays could benefit competitors. Samsung reports that more iPhone users are moving to its foldable devices.

IDC analyst Nabila Popal told CNBC that iPhone Duo shipments may increase by about 70% next year. That would hand Apple approximately 40% of the foldable market, surpassing both Samsung and Huawei.

For Apple, the iPhone Duo pre-orders demonstrate strong demand. The bigger challenge is delivering devices to customers before Samsung attracts those left waiting.
