Elon Musk has endorsed a niche physics idea suggesting quantum machines have an upper bound on growth. Market participants took his five-word response as confirmation that Bitcoin (BTC) is already immune to them.

This conclusion does not hold. Oxford physicist Tim Palmer is behind the theory, which forecasts that quantum computers will plateau at a range of 200 to 400 qubits.

What Musk Actually Said

Musk's comments had nothing to do with Bitcoin. On August 29, he responded to a post by the Institute of Art and Ideas concerning Palmer's research.

His agreement was that the universe is made of discrete units. He did not mention private keys or Bitcoin’s quantum problem. The next day, investor Fred Krueger nonetheless referenced him with a headline claiming Bitcoin is already safe from quantum threats.

“Bitcoin may already be quantum-safe…The latest estimates require at least 835 logical qubits to break Bitcoin’s signatures with Shor’s algorithm…Elon Musk and Steve Jurvetson have commented positively on this research,” he said.

The Physicist Behind the Theory

Palmer holds genuine academic credentials, though they lie outside quantum computing. He became a Royal Society fellow in 2003 and has devoted his career to developing weather prediction models at Oxford.

His paper was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) in March. It contends that nature lacks a smooth continuum, causing entanglement to reach a limit.

Palmer places that boundary at 200 to 400 qubits with present-day hardware and predicts it will never exceed 1,000. Standard quantum theory does not impose such a cap, putting him in a minority view until a device confirms his claim.

The Gap Nobody Can Close Yet

Breaking Bitcoin's signatures requires an estimated 835 logical qubits. A study from July by Han Luo and colleagues reduced that number from prior estimates of 1,098 and 1,175. Those shrinking qubit estimates are the trend to monitor.

Current hardware is far from either figure. IBM intends to build a machine with 200 logical qubits by 2029. That would examine Palmer's lower bound. It would not affect Bitcoin.

Bitcoin's price has not reflected the debate, trading near $78,449 following a 1.17% increase on the day.

Developers are not relying on physics to solve the issue; a post-quantum migration proposal is already under discussion. The true milestone comes around 2029.
