SpaceX has indicated it plans to start launching the first Starmind satellite — a version of Nvidia's Vera Rubin NVL72 rack-scale system adapted for space — in the fourth quarter of 2027. Musk has said the platform will achieve meaningful scale by 2028. That timeline is about a year ahead of what SpaceX had earlier shown to investors prior to its public listing.
The orbital AI effort comes after a larger pledge SpaceX made to Nvidia during its maiden earnings call in August. At that time, Musk said the company will use only Nvidia hardware for its AI infrastructure going forward. He called the Vera Rubin architecture the finest AI computer design on the market, pointing to its cable-free rack system as a major advance in serviceability and reliability compared with conventional data centre setups. Nvidia's stock rose more than 4% on that news, while SpaceX shares initially dropped over 10% before regaining some ground. This reflected investor unease about the capital demands and execution challenges of the orbital computing project, even though the Nvidia partnership was welcomed.

Its peak power is around 150 kilowatts, with average compute of about 120 kilowatts and latency of about 3 milliseconds. The overall plan still depends on solving engineering issues, such as how high-performance processors will handle radiation, extreme temperature shifts, and heat dissipation in a vacuum. The scheme also relies heavily on the dependability and launch frequency of SpaceX's Starship rocket, which has experienced its own developmental delays. Not all industry leaders believe the transition will happen as quickly as Musk expects. Microsoft president Brad Smith said he would be surprised if companies shift computing from terrestrial to low Earth orbit in the near term.
