Elon Musk has predicted that artificial intelligence (AI) will approximately double the rate of US economic expansion in the coming year, lifting it from around 2% to roughly 4%.

That figure stands well above official projections. In data released on September 16, Federal Reserve policymakers forecast growth of 2.4% for 2027.

My guess is that AI roughly doubles US GDP growth next year from ~2% to ~4%. Maybe even more.

Musk’s 4% Projection Far Exceeds Fed and Recent Data

The baseline he cited is near a record high. The Bureau of Economic Analysis reported real GDP expanding at a 1.5% annualized pace in Q2, following a 2.1% gain in Q1.

Central bank officials see 2.3% growth this year and 2.4% next year, with long-run potential estimated at 2.0%. A 4% expansion would mark the fastest pace since the late-1990s tech boom.

Thus far, AI's most tangible economic footprint is in investment rather than production. Massive corporate budgets have gone into chips, data centers, and power plants, a buildout that has influenced which AI stocks investors favor this year.

Newsom Mandates AI Audits; Hinton Warns Congress on Urgency

Musk's prediction arrives as officials in two capitals move to restrain the same technology. On Thursday, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order to fast-track an AI kill switch, a mechanism designed to shut down a model.

The order directs top AI firms to host independent auditors in their labs, and an expert panel has two months to propose stricter safety rules.

In Washington, Nobel Prize winner Geoffrey Hinton told lawmakers on Wednesday that time is running out.

“Maybe a year, but not much more than a year,” NBC News reported, citing Hinton.

Hinton spoke following a closed briefing on Capitol Hill. Last week, BeInCrypto reported that Congress had already handed AI safety responsibilities to company executives.

Neither the Fed nor the Bureau of Economic Analysis has adjusted its projections toward Musk's figure. The third-quarter GDP estimate will be the next official data point to test the forecast.
