European stocks slip, oil climbs on Middle East escalation fears
European stocks mostly fell as Middle East tensions kept oil elevated. US existing-home sales edged above forecasts.
Musk says his companies can eventually make superior chips, with Terrafab costing over $15B; construction could start in December 2026.
Seen from the chip-stock side, the remarks underline that Terrafab is a far-off rather than near-term threat to established foundries. That keeps the read-across to TSMC and Samsung limited while Musk's companies continue buying their output. As joint-venture partner, Intel has the most direct upside, handing its foundry business a marquee anchor customer. For Tesla, the venture means a sizable, open-ended capital commitment with a payoff several years out, a factor investors will balance against the strategic benefit of guaranteed AI chip supply. Musk's concession on timing may cool expectations that had outrun reality.
Musk continues to believe he can outdo the world's chipmakers on their own turf, though for once he is not pledging to achieve it fast.
Bloomberg's paywalled report on Saturday said Musk told an X audience his companies would likely learn to produce semiconductors no one else can beat, crediting their experience constructing custom manufacturing equipment, though he conceded that arriving there could take a fair number of years.
At an X gathering over the weekend, Musk called chipmaking among the hardest tasks anywhere and said he was careful not to come across as overconfident. That restrained message differs from the Austin launch in March, when he presented Terrafab as the most ambitious chip-construction program ever and claimed worldwide fabrication capacity met merely about 2% of the needs of Tesla and SpaceX.
The site for Terrafab is Grimes County, Texas, about an hour northwest of Houston, operated as a joint venture by Tesla and SpaceX with Intel participating. Bloomberg estimated the initial outlay at upwards of $15 billion. The complex, designed at 100 million square feet, goes up in stages over roughly 3,000 acres, though SpaceX controls more than 13,000 acres at the location. September filings with Texas authorities set construction to begin December 1, 2026 and finish by the close of 2028.
Cost projections have swung considerably. Texas Governor Greg Abbott said in August the opening phase would entail capital spending of nearly $17 billion and 3,000 jobs, whereas earlier county documents pointed to much bigger totals for the entire project.
Terrafab's core mission is high-volume output of Tesla's AI5 chips, cutting dependence on external foundries like TSMC and Samsung, which Musk's companies now must fight every other tech firm to use. In the interim, Musk has said, they will continue buying from current suppliers.
The remarks arrived as SpaceX β publicly listed since June β climbed back over its $135 IPO price, a rally that earned Musk the title of first trillionaire. With no construction underway yet, the December start date offers the initial hard check on whether Terrafab can remain on its announced timeline.
The project: Terrafab would be a semiconductor plant complex backed by Elon Musk's companies, operating as a Tesla-SpaceX joint venture with Intel. Tesla's own documents render the name as βTerafab.β
Why Musk wants it: Musk contends existing chipmakers cannot ramp output fast enough to provide the AI silicon his companies need for self-driving cars, Optimus humanoid robots, AI data centres and planned solar-powered satellites. Current global capacity, he has said, addresses only a small slice of that need.
What makes it different: The goal is to house the entire operation in one facility β chip design, logic and memory fabrication, packaging and testing. In much of the industry, those phases are spread among separate firms and locations. Musk believes the setup would enable his teams to design, test and adjust chips considerably more quickly.
What it will make: There are two chip categories: one aimed at robots and vehicles, and a radiation-hardened variant for orbital computing. The initial focus is mass production of Tesla's AI5 chip.
Where and when: The main campus sits in Grimes County, Texas, northwest of Houston. A smaller research fab at Tesla's Austin plant, where work began in April, comes first. State filings show construction starting in December 2026 and completing by end-2028.
The big caveat: Musk's companies have never manufactured chips before, and chipmaking counts among the world's most complicated and capital-intensive industries. Musk now concedes mastering it could take years.
