Musk Says Grok 5 Could Be the AGI Breakthrough

Musk says Grok 5 could be the model that achieves AGI, outlining performance expectations for Grok 4.7 through 4.9.

On September 14, Elon Musk indicated that Grok 5, xAI's upcoming major model, is the one he anticipates will achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI).

The billionaire shared this view across two connected posts on X, which quickly stirred discussion among both researchers and traders.

That will be Grok 5

What Musk Said About Grok 5

AGI refers to AI systems that can match or surpass human abilities across a broad spectrum of intellectual tasks, unlike systems that only excel at narrow, specific jobs. This distinction is central to Musk's recent remarks.

Earlier that day, Musk announced that Grok 4.8, a model with 2.5 trillion parameters built on xAI's new C++ software stack, would complete training within the week and proceed to reinforcement learning. When asked how close Grok 4.8 would get to AGI, Musk responded simply: "That will be Grok 5."

He then elaborated with a clearer roadmap a few minutes later. Grok 4.7, he said, performs about as well as Anthropic's Opus 5.0, excelling in some areas while lagging in others, and its multimodal capabilities still require improvement.

Grok 4.8 would bring a marked enhancement, while Grok 4.9 could match the performance of Astra or Fable. Looking further ahead, Musk wrote: "Grok 5 maybe better than anything. We shall see."

Grok 4.7 should be roughly on par with Opus 5.0, not 5.1. Better in some ways, worse in others. We need to fix multimodal performance.

Grok 4.8 will be a noticeable improvement.

Grok 4.9 is probably Astra/Fable class.

Grok 5 maybe better than anything. We shall see.

xAI has pursued rapid scaling since its inception, combining large compute clusters with unique data sources, such as real-time data from X and specialized engineering knowledge from SpaceX.

This strategy has allowed the company to shrink performance gaps with more established labs in a relatively short period.

Why Does This AGI Timeline Matter Now?

If Grok 5 achieves capabilities at or above human levels, the consequences would reach far beyond chatbot benchmarks.

Musk has previously argued that advanced AI systems could vastly increase global economic output within just a few years, speeding up progress in areas like scientific research, robotics, and software development.

The AI Singularity

The argument goes like this:

1. Humans build an AGI.
2. The AGI becomes good at AI research.
3. It designs a smarter AI.
4. That smarter AI designs an even smarter AI.
5. The cycle repeats faster and faster.

That same potential, however, carries considerable danger. Current worries focus on systems pursuing goals that conflict with human values, the challenge of maintaining control once models surpass human intelligence in key areas, and the chance of sudden, unpredictable leaps in capability.

Job losses, the consolidation of power among a few companies, and the abuse of powerful models by malicious actors round out the list of concerns experts continue to debate.

The timing adds an unusual twist. Musk made these AGI remarks on the same day he publicly endorsed a separate appeal from Anthropic's Dario Amodei, urging the AI industry to slow down capability development—a pairing that highlights the tension between racing toward AGI and warning about its risks.

Whether Grok 5 actually meets Musk's expectations remains uncertain. Still, xAI's progress underscores two simultaneous trends: the speeding-up of frontier AI development and the growing urgency to address the dangers that come with it, even among those building it.
