Chip stocks lift Kospi above 7,130; Nikkei edges up despite yen pressure
South Korea's Kospi jumped over 1.9% on chip strength, while Japan's Nikkei barely rose after weathering a yen spike.

On Thursday morning, reports of ChatGPT outages jumped from 5,000 to over 22,000 within ten minutes. By that time, Claude, Grok, and the coding tool Cursor had already gone down.
Three competing labs failed in roughly 90 minutes, and none of the cloud providers acknowledged any fault. According to Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson, the event resembled a nation-state attack; he noted that Gemini was the only exception because it uses its own TPUs.

Problems with Grok and Claude started being reported near 9 a.m. Eastern Time. Reports of ChatGPT spiked 90 minutes later, based on Downdetector data.
User reports indicate problems with Grok since 9:29 AM EDT.

OpenAI was the only lab to provide a confirmation, logging elevated errors across ChatGPT and its coding system Codex.
Anthropic's users instead faced a capacity wall.
“Due to unexpected capacity constraints, Claude is unable to respond to your message. Try again soon,” read Claude in-app error message.
xAI did not declare an incident, but Grok told users its model was not available.

Hoskinson, who also co-founded Ethereum, believes a nation state hit all three AI models at once. He cited their dependence on Nvidia chips.
“It looks like a national state brought down Claude, ChatGPT, and Grok” Hoskinson wrote.
That is, Hoskinson thinks a government, not a hacker or a technical glitch, purposely knocked the three chatbots offline.
Google did not record any Gemini incident, though users submitted hundreds of reports and it noted a fault in issuing new API keys. A common chip supplier does not constitute a shared failure path. Nvidia hardware housed in different buildings does not break down in unison.
The damage varied: Claude and Grok peaked at about 1,500 reports each, whereas ChatGPT surpassed 35,000.
No lab has alleged an attack, but OpenAI listed 19 components that were impacted, and Anthropic attributed the issue to its Opus models.
This incident has fueled arguments for decentralized AI, specifically pushing Midnight, the privacy sidechain from Hoskinson's Cardano ecosystem.
Why wouldn't they?

This is also why decentralized AI systems are needed

Focus moved to a single building in Memphis. After SpaceX merged with xAI in February, it leased the entire Colossus 1 compute capacity to Anthropic, which was originally built for Grok.

Anthropic draws more than 300 megawatts across 220,000 Nvidia chips at that site, slightly under half of xAI's approximately 500,000-GPU fleet.
Two of the services that went down on Thursday sit on the same racks. However, neither company has linked that configuration to the failures.
“Grok, Claude, and ChatGPT all utilize significant portions of Colossus 1 in Memphis. That is the likely source of the outage… The question is whether it was accidental or sabotage,” one user posed.
Last November, a Cloudflare outage affected crypto platforms, following two AWS failures that took services offline weeks earlier.
In March, Anthropic went down alone in a similar outage.
Centralization remains cheap until everything stops simultaneously.
The disruption arrives as multiple AI models launch within days of each other.
