Netflix beats Q3 EPS estimate, cuts full-year FCF target as Q4 outlook falls short

Netflix reported Q3 EPS of 87 cents, beating estimates, but cut its full-year free cash flow forecast to about $12 billion and issued a softer Q4 guidance.

Traders are likely to focus more on the forward guidance than the quarterly beat, since the former missed consensus for revenue, earnings and margin in Q4. A reduced free cash flow target often pressures valuation-sensitive growth stocks, and the gap against the roughly $12.6 billion consensus may lead analysts to adjust their full-year projections. For the broader streaming and communication services sector, the key question may be whether spending pressures are rising across the industry. Management's statement that internal restructuring is creating room for investment in high-impact areas could support the longer-term narrative, but it does little to offset the weaker near-term figures.

Netflix posted a clear third-quarter profit beat, but the weaker Q4 outlook and reduced cash flow target redirect focus from its earnings to its spending plans.

Key data:

  • Q3 EPS of 87 cents surpassed the 82-cent consensus; revenue of approximately $12.9 billion matched forecasts
  • Q3 free cash flow of about $2.9 billion came in below the roughly $3.2 billion expected
  • Q4 guidance: revenue near $13.4 billion versus the about $13.5 billion projection; EPS of 67 cents compared with 73 cents expected; operating margin of 26% against the roughly 28% consensus
  • Full-year revenue forecast at about $51.1 billion, near the lower end of the prior $51 billion to $51.4 billion range, with growth now at 13%, down from the 13% to 14% range
  • Full-year free cash flow reduced to about $12 billion from about $12.5 billion, below the roughly $12.6 billion consensus; operating margin target unchanged at 31.5%
  • Management said organizational changes allow it to invest in high-impact areas

Netflix's third-quarter 2026 profit exceeded forecasts, but its Q4 and full-year outlooks were weaker than anticipated, as the company cut its free cash flow forecast and issued Q4 earnings guidance below estimates.

EPS reached 87 cents, beating the 82-cent analyst consensus. Revenue at approximately $12.9 billion matched forecasts. The quarterly free cash flow was a soft point, coming in at about $2.9 billion versus the roughly $3.2 billion expected.

The outlook presents less favorable numbers. Netflix projected Q4 revenue of around $13.4 billion, a bit below the approximately $13.5 billion forecast. Q4 EPS guidance of 67 cents missed the 73-cent estimate, and operating income guidance of about $3.5 billion fell short of the near $3.7 billion consensus. The expected Q4 operating margin of 26% also came in under the roughly 28% analyst view.

For fiscal 2026, Netflix now forecasts revenue of roughly $51.1 billion, at the low end of its earlier $51-$51.4 billion range and slightly below the consensus. Revenue growth guidance tightened to 13%, down from the previous 13%-14% range. The full-year operating margin goal remained at 31.5%, slightly under the 31.7% analysts had modeled.

The biggest change concerned cash flow. Netflix reduced its full-year free cash flow projection to around $12 billion, from roughly $12.5 billion earlier, and below the consensus of about $12.6 billion.

Netflix said organizational changes are enabling it to invest in high-impact areas. The company did not detail those areas in the release, but the remark indicates that the weaker margin and cash flow guidance stems from intentional spending decisions rather than demand issues—a distinction investors will likely seek to clarify during the earnings call.

For the stock, the key question is whether investors view the reduced targets as a short-term investment period or as an indication that sustaining growth is becoming costlier.
