Chip stocks lift Kospi above 7,130; Nikkei edges up despite yen pressure
South Korea's Kospi jumped over 1.9% on chip strength, while Japan's Nikkei barely rose after weathering a yen spike.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang declares artificial general intelligence a reality, citing OpenAI's GPT-6; his firm supplies AI chips.
Jensen Huang, the chief executive of Nvidia, stated that artificial intelligence matching human capability is now a reality. His firm provides the computing hardware that powers such systems and has a monetary interest in persuading businesses and investors to continue funding AI development.
On Sunday, Huang attributed the achievement of artificial general intelligenceācommonly understood as AI that can perform cognitive tasks at a human levelāto OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra. No single, globally agreed-upon benchmark exists for AGI.
Four days prior, during a G20 gathering in North Carolina, Huang expressed more caution.
āIn the next couple of years, we are going to achieve essentially what people call AGI⦠In fact, I would argue that weāre practically there today⦠It either means a lot or it doesnāt mean anything,ā he said.
That same uncertainty also applies to the financial agreements that support AI development.
OpenAI's partnership with Microsoft previously linked AGI to systems that could produce roughly $100 billion in profit, according to reports. A revision in October 2025 mandated that an independent panel of experts confirm OpenAI's claim.
In April, the two firms updated their contract. OpenAI's payments to Microsoft are now scheduled to run until 2030 irrespective of technological advancements. The financial structure no longer depends on that determination.
For six years, saying "AGI has arrived" would have blown up the biggest deal in tech.

The 2019 Microsoft contract made AGI a legal trigger. The moment OpenAI's board declared it, Microsoft lost access to all future models and the partnership terminated. Reporting later revealed⦠https://t.co/czojcl9ry7
In the meantime, Sequoia Capital's partners released a piece titled "2026: This is AGI" in January. Physicist Mark Gubrud, who coined the term back in 1997, likewise states that AGI has been achieved.
Part of the dispute stems from varying definitions. In February, months ahead of Astra's debut, Anthropic's CEO Dario Amodei outlined a significantly more demanding standard.
āIf you had the country of geniuses in a data center, we would know it⦠We donāt have that now. Thatās very clear,ā he said.
For those putting money into the sector, Huang's statement on Sunday leaves a concrete query unresolved: what proportion of human tasks can these systems dependably assume?
Cognitive researcher Gary Marcus is not convinced.
āOf course I fully expect that AGI will be achieved someday. But everything said before then is a premature declaration,ā he noted.
