Chip stocks lift Kospi above 7,130; Nikkei edges up despite yen pressure
South Korea's Kospi jumped over 1.9% on chip strength, while Japan's Nikkei barely rose after weathering a yen spike.
Nvidia shares rise toward $236.54 record, holding above key $228.40 support despite broader market weakness.
Despite a negative session for major US stock indexes, Nvidia's price is moving closer to its all-time high. The stock gained $2.70, or 1.12%, to trade at $231.00. During the session, it hit an intraday peak of $234.76, leaving it under $2 away from the record high of $236.54.
From a technical perspective, the proximity of the record high alongside overall market softness has temporarily capped the advance. Yet the intraday pullback has held support around a swing zone near $228.40, despite the broader market's declines.
The $228.40 mark is critical for the short-term direction. As long as the stock stays above this level, buyers maintain strong control and can keep aiming for the $236.54 record high. A move above that peak would take Nvidia into new highs, where traders would seek momentum and follow-through to validate the breakout's durability.
On the other hand, a decisive drop below $228.40 would reduce the bullish outlook, at least for the near term. It would also raise the chance of a further pullback toward the ascending 100-hour moving average around $220, if the stock fails to break the record high. That moving average serves as a more substantial challenge for buyers. Holding above it would keep the larger bullish trend intact, while falling beneath it would shift control to sellers.
The most successful traders often examine different markets using a similar methodology. The technical approach applied to Nvidia is the same one used for currency pairs, stock indices, oil, and other commodities. The instrument may change, but the process remains the same: define the bias, pinpoint the level that would invalidate that bias, limit the risk, and set the next targets.
For Nvidia, the rise above the swing zone around $228.40 marked a bullish change. Staying above that level would keep buyers confident and the record high attainable. Dropping back below it would be an initial sign that upward momentum is weakening.
