Google unveils MPC-based crypto custody system for institutions
Google is launching a multi-party computation crypto custody tool that splits signing keys, according to a report.
OpenAI says its model disproved the Exponential Time Hypothesis, but Bitcoin and Ethereum cryptography remain unaffected.
An artificial intelligence system developed by OpenAI has allegedly disproved the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH) by uncovering a quicker approach to a classic logical challenge. A proof verified by machine backs the assertion, challenging a belief that researchers had relied upon for 27 years.
The finding does not establish that P equals NP, the broader issue that underpins contemporary encryption. Consequently, the algorithm presents no immediate danger to the cryptographic systems protecting Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum.
Announcing three major scientific discoveries, one each in mathematics (harmonic analysis), computer science (complexity theory), and physics (quantum field theory).

The hypothesis deals with 3-SAT, a problem constructed from true-or-false variables and constraints connecting them. The objective is to assign values so that all constraints are satisfied simultaneously.
Verifying a suggested solution is straightforward. Discovering one is difficult, as every additional variable doubles the number of potential assignments.
Russell Impagliazzo and Ramamohan Paturi put forward ETH in 1999. Despite the matching acronym, it is unrelated to Ethereum's trading symbol.
The hypothesis states that no algorithm can avoid this exponential expansion in the worst scenario.
Researchers treated it as a foundational element. According to OpenAI, numerous papers across graph theory, computational biology, and databases built hardness results upon it.
On October 16, OpenAI's system generated a proof in natural language. The following day, the team encoded it in Lean, software that confirms each logical step.
The publicly available algorithm processes inputs with n variables in about 2^(n/√log n) steps. That performance outperforms the exponential limit ETH predicted, but remains far from practical applicability.
OpenAI notes that tangible acceleration demands considerable additional investigation.
Impagliazzo and Paturi, both at UC San Diego, will now oversee the review together with Ryan Williams from MIT. In short, the hypothesis's originators are evaluating its refutation.
Meanwhile, OpenAI is not taking scientific credit for the finding, a position that follows a prior dispute over Navier-Stokes.
Scott Aaronson, a computer science professor at the University of Texas at Austin, described learning about the development.
“My students just came to my office to tell me that an OpenAI model has now refuted the Exponential Time Hypothesis”

No. P versus NP asks whether every problem whose answers can be verified quickly can also be solved quickly.
ETH was a stronger assertion than P ≠ NP. Hence, falsifying it leaves the greater question unsettled.
Imagine a peak between two valleys. The AI discovered a shorter route over the summit, not a passage right through it.
Greg Brockman, OpenAI's president and co-founder, made the same point shortly after the announcement.
p still probably doesn't equal np

The distinction matters for crypto owners. Bitcoin signatures depend on elliptic curve cryptography, a difficult mathematical problem this algorithm does not target.
Benjamin Cowen, a member of BeInCrypto's Market Intelligence Expert Council, addressed the worry.
But to be clear, disproving the Exponential Time Hypothesis would not prove P = NP, nor would it mean Bitcoin or Ethereum are compromised.
Previous beliefs about impossibility have been overturned. In 1960, Anatoly Karatsuba refuted Andrey Kolmogorov's multiplication conjecture in roughly a week.
Similarly, in 1969 Volker Strassen set out to prove that standard matrix multiplication was optimal and instead found a faster method.
What is different now is who identifies the shortcut. Machines generate the proofs, while humans strive to comprehend them.
The same release claimed additional proofs in harmonic analysis and particle physics.
That pace carries significance for digital assets. Cryptographer Matthew Green has previously cautioned that AI might undermine the mathematics underlying wallets.
Cowen framed the broader lesson in market terminology. In his view, fields far removed from finance can eventually transform markets.
For an industry secured by hardness assumptions, every AI breakthrough now acts as a stress test.
