European stocks slip, oil climbs on Middle East escalation fears
European stocks mostly fell as Middle East tensions kept oil elevated. US existing-home sales edged above forecasts.
Palantir CEO Alex Karp warned AI could predict people's private thoughts, as PLTR shares hit a record $212.94.
According to Palantir CEO Alex Karp, AI may soon predict what people are thinking rather than just what they might buy.
As AI stocks climb, Karp's remarks pose a worrying question: Could the technology eventually be used to anticipate individuals' innermost thoughts?
Firms currently employ artificial intelligence to forecast customer purchases and loan repayment likelihood. These systems examine prior conduct to estimate future actions.
Karp cautioned that the technology could advance to the point of anticipating people's thoughts before they act.
Palantir develops sophisticated tools used by the US military and government agencies. Its systems assist in analyzing combat information and supporting military decisions.
Karp now warns that comparable forecasting tools could eventually be aimed at individuals within the United States. He outlined several concerns:
He further warned that businesses might follow legal requirements while violating the law's intent.
“You can actually predict people’s behaviour, which may mean you are predicting their actual thoughts one is going to have in a domestic context. Now this is something we must look at controlling it,” Karp stated during a recent interview.
Investors have remained unperturbed. PLTR hit an all-time peak of $212.94 the previous day. The shares now trade near $209, having climbed roughly 25% over the past month and more than 50% over six months.
Across five years, the stock has surged more than 780%, pushing the company's market capitalization above $500 billion. Robust government contracts and rising demand for commercial AI applications keep the uptrend going.
This rally has focused attention on expansion rather than oversight. Yet the tension is genuine. Karp's remarks prompt questions regarding surveillance, personal freedom, and who sets the boundaries for predictive tools.
The limits for forecasting systems that examine individual behavior remain under debate. Corporations, regulators, and courts will all shape the eventual boundaries.
The stock's trajectory may depend more on regulation than on ethics. For now, the market is pricing in growth.
