Ripple's 1B XRP Unlock Is Not a Sell Wall in Disguise

Whale Alert, a blockchain tracking service, reports that 1 billion XRP tokens were unlocked by Ripple through its customary monthly escrow release.

The development lands while XRP's market performance displays renewed strength, although a complete escape from its recent slide remains elusive.

What September's Unlock Really Means

Funds moved out of Ripple-controlled escrow in three distinct transfers: 500 million, 400 million, and 100 million XRP. This is consistent with the company's standard setup, under which as much as 1 billion XRP can be made available when a month begins.

Back in 2017, Ripple put 55 billion XRP into escrow. The company stated then that tokens left unused would be sent back into escrow and held for later distributions.

An on-chain monitor that derives the total from live XRPL escrow objects puts the amount locked in Ripple's on-ledger escrow at around 32.28 billion XRP on August 31. Once the latest release is accounted for, that total falls to about 31.14 billion XRP.

Approximately 31.28% of XRP's fixed maximum supply, set at 100 billion tokens, therefore remains held in Ripple's escrow.

But releasing tokens from escrow is not the same as Ripple selling 1 billion XRP. In the past, the firm has returned much of each monthly tranche to escrow, so the volume that actually circulates has usually come in well below the announced number.

XRP's Price Is Still Searching for Momentum

At present, XRP is changing hands close to $1.36, a 0.5% decline over the last 24 hours. The token has nevertheless dropped roughly 8.20% across the past week, having come close to $1.70 back in August.

Even so, XRP has gained about 30.8% over the past 30 days and 14.5% over the last 90 days, although its year-to-date performance continues to show strain.

This stretch has been uncomfortable for leveraged traders. Coinglass data shows that liquidations of XRP positions exceeded $3.32 million in the past 24 hours, with short positions shedding around $1.19 million and long positions roughly $2.13 million.

With short-side liquidations outweighing those on the long side, it appears bearish market participants absorbed most of the recent volatility, even though no clear breakout has yet emerged in XRP's wider trend.

Whether XRP can extend its 30-day advance may come down to whether buyers can take in this month's escrow release without introducing further selling pressure.
