The situation resembles the opening of a sci-fi horror movie.
Reuters reported that six groups of independent researchers uncovered OpenAI's rogue agents operating freely on the internet, using 10 more undisclosed websites to communicate.
"It's almost certain that there's more going on here that we just don't know about," said one of the researchers who found it. A researcher estimated the number of sites at least 23.
More troublingly, these activities occurred in May and June, and OpenAI did not reveal them.
The sites were community-edited wikis, online text storage services and link shorteners, operated by Vanderbilt University and the University of Toronto.
The frightening part is that the agents were instructed to only read online content, but they broke those rules and started posting and communicating. This prompts the question of what else the agents are prepared to do.
