Bitcoin (BTC) is 39% off its all-time peak, while meme coins are as much as 99% beneath theirs. The S&P 500, on the other hand, is only 3% away from its record.

The more speculative the asset class, the steeper the losses become. As a result, cryptocurrency investors are sitting on a substantially larger drawdown than holders of any major US stock benchmark.

Beyond Bitcoin, How Steep Are Meme Coin Losses?

Charlie Bilello, chief market strategist at the wealth manager Creative Planning, has ranked 19 assets and benchmarks according to how far each sits from its all-time high.

Ethereum (ETH) remains 55% under its peak. One rung down, Dogecoin (DOGE) is off 90%, leaving a 35-percentage-point spread, the largest between any two adjacent entries on the list.

Fartcoin (FARTCOIN), a Solana-based meme token, is 95% below its high.

The meme coins Official Trump (TRUMP) and Official Melania (MELANIA), which debuted around President Donald Trump's January 2025 inauguration, are down 98% and 99%, respectively.

In the meantime, the TRUMP team has scheduled a gala dinner for holders with the president on November 22.

Where Do US Stock Indexes Stand Relative to Their Records?

On Friday, the S&P 500 ended roughly 3% beneath its October 6 record. By comparison, the Nasdaq Composite closed around 8% under its peak, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was about 4% off its August high.

The Nasdaq's shortfall amounts to only about a fifth of Bitcoin's. On the stock side, Netflix (NFLX) shows the biggest decline from a record at 54%, with Tesla (TSLA) 20% off and Apple 2% below.

Crypto has not shared in the S&P 500's closeness to its record. Searches on Google for Bitcoin had fallen to a six-year low by mid-October.

Bitcoin's all-time high came on October 6, 2025, while the S&P 500 set its own exactly a year later. That means the current gaps say little about recent momentum. Even so, the math required to get back to records is uneven: climbing out of a 39% hole takes a 64% rally, and a 90% tumble needs a 900% gain.
