Oil plunges $7.58 as Republicans blame Iran war for midterm losses
WTI crude fell $7.58, stocks and gold rallied as Republicans blamed the Iran war for midterm losses.
Senate-control odds in prediction markets slipped to 73% for Democrats from 77%, a modest shift toward Republicans, while House control held near 93%.
Prediction markets have moved a touch further toward the Republicans holding the Senate in their latest pricing, whereas the House picture has barely budged. That second part is why I read the shift as noise in a fairly thin market rather than a genuine signal. Either way, the figures deserve attention.
Plenty of analysis is circulating on early-voting turnout and the patterns within it, but separating the signal from the noise is next to impossible.
Democrats have been strong favourites for the House all cycle and that has not changed — Kalshi puts it at roughly 93%. The Senate is far less settled, since it hinges on a small group of states each with its own local factors at play.
At the peak this morning, the implied chance of Democrats taking the Senate stood at 77%; it has since slipped to 73%. A small move, but a move nonetheless. Worth noting that at the same point yesterday it was 74%.
The drift may hint at patterns in the Senate races that are in play.
Equities are in reasonable spirits today, with the S&P 500 ahead 0.6% and the Russell 2000 up 0.8%, though I would have trouble reading a signal into that too. Apple rose shortly after the open but has gone flat since and sits down 1.6%.
For concrete numbers to trade on, an early-reporting district worth watching is Kentucky's seventh, where the Republican won by 15 points in 2024 but Democrat Zach Dembo carries 59% odds this time. Results there should begin around 7 pm ET. Goldman Sachs also flags IN-05 and IN-01, which were won by 16.8 pp Republican and 0.4 pp Democrat margins in 2024. Expect those nearer 8 pm ET.
Broadly, we should have a fair sense of direction from 8 pm and a clear picture by 10 pm ET.
