Misha Komarov from alloc/init discussed Shielded Bitcoin, a research concept using zero-knowledge proofs to hide transaction details, requiring no soft fork.
A proposal from a group of researchers aims to bring privacy to Bitcoin without requiring any modifications to the blockchain. Misha Komarov, a co-founder of alloc/init, presented Shielded Bitcoin, a concept that uses zero-knowledge proofs to obscure the identities of the sender and receiver as well as the amount transferred. The system needs no soft fork, no custodians, and no bridges. Komarov also covered how Bitcoin PIPEs enable this approach and what aspects still require development. The proposal remains at the research stage, not a finished product.
The conversation spanned a series of topics: the core idea of Shielded Bitcoin as a method for private transactions using zero-knowledge proofs; the role of Bitcoin PIPEs in making privacy possible without a soft fork; trust considerations for indexers and zero-knowledge rollups; a comparison of Shielded Bitcoin to Monero and Zcash; the specific privacy properties that Shielded Bitcoin safeguards; the small privacy set challenge for early users; whether the proposal could render altcoins obsolete; the effects on transaction fees, block space, and larger shielded transactions; the demand from users like those vulnerable to wrench attacks and corporate treasuries; and potential adoption in dark pools and by governments as additional buyers.
