On Wednesday, Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko drew attention to a tokenized dinosaur skull sale with three dinosaur emojis as the $660,000 fundraising effort approached its deadline.

Jurassic Finance is working to bring Deaton, a Triceratops prorsus skull, onto Solana as one million tradable tokens. By early Wednesday, the campaign had secured 61% of its goal.

Tokenized Dinosaur Skull Sale Tops $400,000

As of Wednesday morning, contributors had pledged $406,667 in USDC, according to the project's dashboard. About 13 hours were left in the sale.

The allocation is straightforward: $600,000 will go toward acquiring the fossil, with $60,000 directed to the labs treasury. Each TRCH1 token is priced near $0.69 and represents one-millionth of Deaton.

Ownership is structured through a special purpose vehicle. According to the team, holders receive economic rights to the fossil rather than direct ownership of the bone.

The offering operates on an all-or-nothing basis. If the target is not reached, contributors receive full refunds, and the project will not accept more than the goal.

That setup is significant, because questions remain about what tokenized asset holders actually own.

A 66-Million-Year-Old Fossil With a Fresh Price Comp

The fossil was excavated from the Hell Creek Formation in Slope County, North Dakota, in 1999, with preparation only completed last year.

All three original horns remain intact. The specimen is 60% to 65% complete by bone mass, placing it in museum-grade territory.

Jurassic Finance points to a recent auction as a benchmark. Sofia, a comparable sub-adult Triceratops skull, sold for $840,000 on July 1 against an estimate of $600,000 to $800,000.

The team plans to loan Deaton to a museum for long-term display instead of keeping it in storage.

“Museums fund all operational overhead in exchange for display rights.”

Solana continues to attract unusual collectibles, from a tokenized One Piece manga to equities. The project unveiled its fossil initiative in July.

The timing is not ideal, however. SOL was trading near $97 on Wednesday, roughly 4% lower over the past day.

Whether investors step up to cover the remaining $253,000 before the deadline will gauge how far RWA appetite extends beyond traditional assets.
