On Wednesday, 21 October, Solana activated the Alpenglow upgrade, swapping out the consensus mechanism that had been in place since the network debuted in 2020. The main improvement is speed. Instead of about 12.8 seconds, transactions now achieve finality — the moment they become irreversible — in a fraction of a second. This benefits exchanges, payment applications, and traders on the network. Whether this translates into increased demand for SOL is another matter, and early market moves indicate investors share that view.
Anza, the company that develops Agave — Solana's primary validator software — had planned the activation for approximately 14:50 UTC. The new feature came online at the beginning of epoch 1064. The previous consensus mechanism, TowerBFT, continued operating for another 5,000 slots, equivalent to about 18 minutes, before transferring control to Alpenglow at slot 459,653,000. The network remained online throughout. Anza characterized the process as replacing the consensus engine on a live network.
In September 2025, validators voted on the upgrade, with roughly 98% in support. Alpenglow launched on Solana's testnet on 24 September and on devnet the following day. Prior to setting a mainnet date, Anza conducted a bug bounty exceeding 25,000 SOL, incorporated findings from 115 security researchers, and ran simulations across 1,500 nodes. A previously scheduled September deadline passed without activation, as developers stated publicly they would not rush it.
Blockchain transactions are confirmed in steps. On Solana, users previously saw a transaction marked "confirmed" within a short time. Complete finality — the assurance that a transaction cannot be undone — required roughly 12.8 seconds. Numerous exchanges require finality before they credit deposits, and merchants processing payments also focus on that milestone.
Alpenglow aims for finality in approximately 150 milliseconds, and it consolidates "confirmed" and "finalized" into a single status. It achieves this in part by relocating validator votes off the chain. Votes are now transmitted as signed messages and aggregated into a single certificate, thereby freeing block space. According to Anza, the design remains secure if up to 20% of the stake behaves maliciously and an additional 20% is offline.
Validator votes were previously logged as on-chain transactions, constituting roughly 63% of the total transactions on the network. These now do not appear in blocks. Any monitoring tool that included those votes will indicate a significant drop in transactions per second. This reflects an accounting adjustment, not a usage decline. Those evaluating Solana activity before and after 21 October should bear this point in mind.
This upgrade enhances Solana's utility. However, it alone does not guarantee that more SOL will be purchased or retained. Token demand hinges on network usage, fees, staking, and the broader cryptocurrency market. A quicker network can bolster all these factors eventually, but that relationship must be demonstrated by data.
The immediate price movement illustrates this. Based on market reports, SOL rose in the 24 hours prior to activation, then surrendered those gains as Bitcoin declined and risk tolerance diminished. A widely anticipated upgrade is frequently priced in beforehand, and in the near term, overall market sentiment generally outweighs network-specific developments.
The optimistic scenario gains support if exchanges reduce their SOL deposit intervals and payment companies build services on the faster settlement foundation. That would indicate the upgrade converting into tangible utilization. The scenario loses credibility if the network experiences instability in the weeks following the change, especially given Solana's record of downtime. Another risk involves client concentration. Alpenglow is currently running on Anza's Agave client, and a version of Jump Crypto's Firedancer compatible with it has not yet been announced.
