Standard Chartered launches spot bitcoin and ether trading for institutional clients in Dubai, becoming the first globally systemically important bank to…
Standard Chartered's Dubai branch will now provide institutional clients with actual Bitcoin and Ether in the United Arab Emirates. Customers receive the digital assets directly, not a derivative that merely tracks the price.
The bank disclosed the service on Thursday through its Dubai entity. Only 29 lenders worldwide carry the too-big-to-fail designation. Among them, just this one now transfers actual coins.
The Financial Stability Board designates those 29 banks each year. Its 2025 list placed Standard Chartered in the lowest risk tier, with a 1% capital surcharge.
JPMorgan sits three risk tiers above it. Citigroup and HSBC are two tiers higher. Standard Chartered says no other global systemically important bank offers a similar deliverable spot service.
The smallest of the systemic banks moved first, not the largest. Deliverable is the critical term because the client ultimately holds Bitcoin. This means bank personnel must transfer real coins and safeguard them.
The attraction lies in the fee revenue. Standard Chartered earns from the spread, settlement, and custody, rather than losing that income to crypto exchanges.
The bank assembled the Dubai infrastructure in stages. Custody debuted in September 2024, with hedge fund Brevan Howard Digital as its first client.
Spot trading launched in London in July 2025. The bank then added USDC minting there in July 2026. Execution filled the remaining gap.
Every step received approval from the Dubai Financial Services Authority. All four launches occurred in Dubai or London, never in the United States.
Rivals are behind. Citigroup is still preparing bitcoin custody, a service Standard Chartered has provided for two years.
Banks are not chasing a rally. They are building while the price is low, targeting clients wealthy enough to qualify. Retail investors are not on that list.
