Sui and Alibaba Cloud Plan AI Agent Payments Without Manual Approval

Sui and Alibaba Cloud collaborate so AI agents can pay for cloud services autonomously, but risks and details remain unclear.

Sui and Alibaba Cloud are collaborating on a system that allows AI agents to settle cloud service payments independently. With a pre-set budget, an agent can cover its computing needs without requiring human confirmation for each transaction.

The concept draws from a framework examined in BeInCrypto’s State of AI Agent Payments 2026 report. Among 19 products and agentic workflows surveyed, 14 operated within human-defined boundaries without requiring individual authorizations. Sui and Alibaba Cloud announced the initiative at Sui Basecamp, the blockchain's yearly conference held in Singapore. Neither company has disclosed a launch timeline, pricing details, or the specific services that will be involved initially.

What Happens When an AI Agent Controls a Budget?

As part of the arrangement, Alibaba Cloud's offerings will integrate with Sui Agent Payments, a toolkit from Sui designed for AI agent transactions. Agents will then settle each request individually as they consume the service.

Imagine this checkout experience: you set a budget, your agent does the rest.

This method contrasts with conventional card payments, which require human approval for each transaction. Here, software determines the spending rate within boundaries established by a person.

Nevertheless, Sui and Alibaba Cloud have not detailed how users provide instructions to agents aside from defining a budget. A spending cap restricts the total amount an agent can disburse but does not control how it allocates funds.

A Single Bug Could Deplete the Entire Budget

Imagine an agent caught in a repetition, repeatedly submitting the same chargeable request. Since each call is processed automatically, a flaw could exhaust the full budget before any human intervention occurs.

Neither company has indicated whether the system includes rate limits or notifications to prevent such a scenario.

Mysten Labs, the organization that created Sui, centered this year's conference on the agentic economy. Co-founder Adeniyi Abiodun outlined the concept before the event.

“Economic activity is shifting from people clicking checkout buttons to agents transacting on their behalf, continuously and at machine speed.”

Sui and Alibaba Cloud Join a Competitive Agent Payments Field

The agreement arrives as other blockchain networks target the same opportunity. In September, Cardano adopted the x402 standard, enabling agents to settle online service payments in ADA.

In addition, Wall Street has taken interest. A BlackRock research paper identified stablecoins as the primary candidate for machine-native currency.

In market activity, Sui's native token SUI has risen by roughly 43% in the past month, according to BeInCrypto price data.

The larger challenge extends beyond a single network. If Sui and Alibaba Cloud successfully scale per-call stablecoin transactions, other cloud providers might feel compelled to adopt similar models.

Currently, adoption is still in its early stages. BeInCrypto's State of Agentic Payments research investigates the actual volume underlying the reported figures.
