China's CSI 300 Enters Bear Market as Asian Sell-Off Broadens
China's CSI 300 fell into bear market on 10-week losing streak, with Asian markets also declining.
Super Micro shares surged 14% after a preliminary update showed revenue beating analyst expectations by about $4bn and margins improving.
The preliminary figures signal fresh demand for AI hardware, and after-hours trading in Dell and HPE indicates investors see it as a read-across for the broader server sector rather than a one-off for Super Micro. This bounce-back follows sharp declines in both stocks last week, so the recovery may test whether the sell-off was excessive. The gross-margin improvement could matter more than the revenue beat, since it alleviates a persistent worry that Super Micro has sacrificed profitability to gain market share. Until complete results arrive on 3 November, the big unknown is the share of business coming from large cloud firms as opposed to emerging AI-focused providers, whose orders might be less durable.
The company exceeded estimates on both volume and margin, and that dual strength pushed the entire server market higher for a time.
Key figures from the update:
Shares of Super Micro Computer climbed 14% in Tuesday's extended trading session after the company unexpectedly published preliminary figures for the quarter ended September, revealing revenue and profit margins that comfortably surpassed both its own projections and what analysts on Wall Street were calling for.
Revenue is projected at between $18.5 billion and $19.5 billion for the period, well above the $14.5 billion-to-$15.5 billion range it previously guided to. The FactSet-compiled analyst consensus had stood at roughly $15 billion. For the middle of the new bracket, that works out at close to 280% annualised revenue growth, a rate that underscores the surge in investment in AI computing equipment.
Profitability, a long-standing worry for shareholders in Super Micro, also strengthened. Gross margin is expected to land at 12% to 12.5%, exceeding the earlier 10.4% to 10.8% estimate. This gauge of how much sales revenue is retained after product manufacturing costs suggests the company is securing better pricing, even if its margins are still slight next to typical tech hardware peers. Rival Dell Technologies has traditionally held an edge in pricing on AI servers.
The results were characterised by analysts as an encouraging indicator of AI compute demand; one analyst pointed out that the mix of higher volume and fatter margins augurs well for the broader server industry. Dell stock added 6% in post-market trading and Hewlett Packard Enterprise rose 5%, clawing back part of the previous week's steep drops.
The disclosure landed on a busy day for tech investors, coinciding with what SpaceX reported for its own quarter, which also featured significant AI-linked revenue.
The Super Micro statement was concise, containing just a few numbers without much context. According to analysts, a major unanswered question is the proportion of sales that originated from the established cloud giants versus newer AI cloud operators like CoreWeave and SpaceX. The composition of that customer base will influence how lasting investors consider the expansion to be.
A more complete set of numbers will arrive on 3 November, when Super Micro publishes its official financial results, and investors will be watching for clues about whether the current quarter can maintain the momentum.
