Bitcoin at 18: Satoshi's $85B Fortune and the AI Challenge

President Trump commented on cryptocurrency risks following a $6.3B Binance hack, while his financial disclosure shows $1.4B in crypto earnings from family…
Donald Trump generated more than $1.4 billion from crypto in the past year. On Friday, he stated that he has "always felt" digital money was "a little bit dangerous."
Both statements are documented: the earnings appear in Trump’s financial disclosure, and the comment came from the Oval Office one day after roughly $6.3 billion was stolen from Binance by hackers.
When questioned about the Binance hack, Trump responded by referencing paper checks.
“You know, the old-fashioned way when you used to sign a check… These are different. People never see the money anymore. So I’ve always felt it was a little bit dangerous,” he said.
This is not the first time Trump has expressed such views. In July 2019, he described crypto as "not money" and "based on thin air." During a June 2021 Fox Business interview, he said Bitcoin (BTC) "seems like a scam," and later that December, he labeled crypto "a very dangerous thing."
The Trump family later entered the crypto space. The 2025 disclosure outlines the earnings.
The biggest entry, $636 million, came from a licensing agreement for the TRUMP meme coin—a token marketed using his name and likeness. An additional $515 million (or more) originated from token sales by World Liberty Financial, a crypto company he established with his sons.
World Liberty also issues USD1, a stablecoin designed to hold a value of $1. A majority of that token has remained on Binance, as BeInCrypto detailed in February regarding Binance's control over USD1.
In October 2025, Trump granted a pardon to Binance founder Changpeng Zhao. The White House stated that the previous prosecution was driven by a "desire to punish the cryptocurrency industry," per PBS.
An August Reuters/Ipsos poll indicated that 63% of Americans consider Trump's crypto earnings to be inappropriate.
Trump made his comments four days prior to the Tuesday midterm elections. Binance has stated that customers will not incur losses. Trump's response consisted of just two words: "We'll see."
