US equity indices slip with diverging technical biases

US stock indexes fell on inflation worries, led by tech shares; the S&P 500 held a range while the Nasdaq 100 broke daily support.

US stock benchmarks were trading in negative territory on the day, with inflation worries still hanging over sentiment. The technology sector was pacing the losses:

  • Nasdaq Composite: off 1.15%.
  • Nasdaq 100: lower by 1.30%.
  • S&P 500: 0.42% lower.

Those losses, however, don't capture the full picture. On the charts, the three benchmarks are following distinct paths. Where does the danger sit? What would hand buyers greater influence? And what would clear the way for additional downside?

S&P 500: The next shove is still pending

  • The S&P 500 is trading between its 100-hour and 200-hour moving averages, with those levels at 7746.68 and 7706.33, respectively.
  • Within that range, the near-term read is neutral, with buyers and sellers contesting control as they await a decisive move.
  • A climb above 7746.68 — and sustained trading beyond it — would shift the bias toward gains. Falling through 7706.33, meanwhile, would hand sellers the upper hand.

Nasdaq Composite: Sellers hold the edge, with daily support still intact

  • At 26827.18 and 27116.00, the 200-hour and 100-hour moving averages sit well above the Nasdaq Composite, keeping the near-term edge with sellers.
  • To start repairing the chart, buyers would first have to get back above those averages, beginning with the lower 200-hour moving average.
  • Still, the index holds above its climbing 100-day moving average at 26288.75, which stands as a critical downside marker. As long as that level holds, buyers keep a foothold; a sustained break below it would open the door to further selling pressure.

Nasdaq 100: Sellers keep a firm grip

  • The Nasdaq 100 has distanced itself from its hourly moving averages and is now slipping beneath its 100-day moving average at 29624.02.
  • At 29452.10, today's low has already undercut yesterday's low and the prior weekly low at 29554, extending the fall. The key test is whether sellers can hold the break.
  • Remaining below 29554 keeps the pressure on. A move back over that level would relieve some near-term pressure, yet buyers would still need to recapture the 100-day moving average at 29624.02 to start repairing the chart.

The lesson: Let the levels decide the bias

A down day does not necessarily leave every benchmark with the same bearish read. The S&P 500 is still sandwiched between its hourly moving averages. The Nasdaq Composite sits beneath those averages while holding above daily support. The Nasdaq 100, for its part, is now moving below that daily support too.

These variations are significant. The levels offer traders a way to gauge risk, determine which side is in command, and see what would have to shift.
