US August housing starts at 1.275m missed estimation; permits also lower. Mortgage rates near 7%; relief may come after Iran war, if ever.

  • The prior month's figure was 1.239m.
  • Previous housing starts had fallen 12.4%.
  • Building permits came in at 1.394m, missing expectations of 1.410m.
  • The prior reading for permits stood at 1.433m.

US housing starts dropped 2.6%, while permits decreased 2.7%, as the housing market continues to struggle. With 30-year mortgage rates currently hovering around 7%, there is no immediate relief. However, the Fed's determination to fight inflation could lead to some reprieve after the Iran war, if that point is ever reached.
