Willy Woo Sees Buy Signal in Bitcoin's Six-Year Search Low

Bitcoin search interest has fallen to a six-year low, and analyst Willy Woo views the quiet as a buy signal, with BTC near $82,070.

Google queries for “bitcoin” have slipped to about 14 on a 100-point scale, the lowest reading in close to six years. On-chain analyst Willy Woo says such quiet has historically signaled the best time to buy.

The people still searching look different, however. Bitcoin (BTC) is trading near $82,070, up 1.5% over the last day, and the interest that remains seems to be driven mainly by traders.

Can Slumping Bitcoin Google Searches Signal a Buy Zone?

On October 15, Woo posted Google Trends figures for “Bitcoin” and “BTCUSD” alongside a simple contrarian rule.

The best time to buy BTC is when nobody is interested in it.

The best time to sell BTC is when everybody is engaged.

— Willy Woo (@willywoo), October 15, 2026

The same pattern has appeared in the past. Data assembled by X user gidwell0x pairs price with search interest, showing “bitcoin” queries peaking in December 2017, the same month BTC topped near $20,000.

Search activity then dropped to around 10 during the 2018 and 2019 bear market, a stretch that turned out to be a strong accumulation window.

Why Traders, Not Newcomers, Are Now Driving the Shift

Across this cycle, “bitcoin” searches have not climbed above roughly 45, well short of the 2017 and 2021 peaks.

“BTCUSD” searches, in contrast, reached a record in 2025, just before BTC’s October all-time high.

That divergence suggests a different audience. The latest wave of attention was led by traders and ETF-era investors rather than curious newcomers. Woo has argued that bitcoin may abandon its halving cycle in favor of longer traditional finance (TradFi) cycles.

The gauge also suffers from a timing flaw. Search interest in 2021 peaked about six months ahead of the November price top. Other contrarian indicators, such as extreme fear readings, have lagged in a similar way.

The October figures span just part of the month. Because every term is normalized to its own peak, the two curves are not directly comparable.

How Does Bitcoin’s Size Compare With Gold and Stocks?

BTC has a market capitalization of close to $1.65 trillion, based on live BTC price data.

Using supply estimates from the World Gold Council, gold’s value amounts to roughly $29.3 trillion, or about 18 times as much. Global equities stood at $157.8 trillion at the end of 2025, per the World Federation of Exchanges.

Several replies to Woo saw that gap as room for growth. Others named US midterm elections, ongoing wars, and an energy crisis as reasons BTC could remain range-bound.

Should Woo’s guideline prove correct, the current calm would be a sign of accumulation, not euphoria. Traders now shape search traffic, and Google data may in that case reflect speculative appetite more than mainstream adoption.
