Peter Brandt Sees Silver Nearing a Final Low, But Warns of a Gradual Recovery

Oil prices dropped after the Democrats won the midterms. WTI crude now tests a key support region near moving averages.
The reduction in oil prices after the Democrats swept the US midterms implies that the market views a strong electoral defeat for Trump as a rapid means to lower energy costs.
WTI crude has faced intense selling pressure since the prior trading session, with traders betting that Trump's diminished political standing could lead to a de-escalation of the US-Iran conflict. What triggered this change in market outlook?
Trump now confronts a more challenging domestic political landscape, with Democrats controlling Congress. The US-Iran war has already burdened ordinary Americans through higher energy costs, and the midterm results suggest voters have grown impatient. This situation may provide Washington with a stronger incentive to pursue diplomacy rather than further escalation.
Nevertheless, the question arises whether oil traders are moving too far, too fast.
Experience has shown repeatedly that peace aspirations and actual negotiated deals are different. While optimism has revived among traders now, there remains no guarantee that either Washington or Tehran will make the necessary concessions to end the conflict.
Regarding oil prices, the market has reached a decisive point this week.
WTI crude is probing a critical support area between $86.80 and $87.00, where the 100-day and 200-day moving averages converge. The 50.0 Fib retracement level of the July-September rally also lies nearby at $86.90, adding to the significance of this price zone.
For now, sellers are well positioned, having already forced a break below the trendline support from the July-August lows. Consequently, buyers face a key defensive task.
A firm daily close beneath this support region could invite a deeper correction toward the 61.8 Fibi retracement level at $82.21, before the psychological $80 mark comes into focus.
Conversely, buyers must reclaim a break above the swing region around $88.75 to $88.00 to regain some control, and then $95 again to begin repairing the technical damage.
The technical picture is currently starting to favor sellers. However, the Iran war remains unresolved, so an unexpected headline could easily reverse the current selloff.
