MT4 and MT5 are currently the two most widely used forex trading platforms globally. Although both are developed by MetaQuotes, each has unique features suited to different types of traders.

Advantages of MT4

Since its launch in 2005, MT4 has accumulated a large user base, with rich community resources and third-party indicators. It is optimized for forex trading with a clean and efficient interface. It supports Expert Advisors (EAs) developed in MQL4, a mature ecosystem of automated tools, and most brokers support MT4, offering a wide range of choices.

Limitations of MT4

MT4 has a more limited range of asset classes, mainly focusing on forex and CFDs; fewer chart timeframes (only 9 standard timeframes); and does not support Depth of Market (DOM) functionality.

Advantages of MT5

MT5 covers multiple asset classes including forex, stocks, futures, and options; offers 21 chart timeframes for richer analysis dimensions; includes a built-in economic calendar for tracking important economic events; supports real-time Depth of Market; and offers faster multi-currency backtesting.

Limitations of MT5

MT4 and MT5 EAs are not compatible, resulting in higher migration costs; some smaller brokers do not yet support MT5; and the learning curve is relatively steeper.

How to Choose?

If you primarily trade forex, MT4 is a time-tested, robust choice. If you want to trade diversified asset classes or need more advanced analysis features, MT5 is a more forward-looking option.
