TRON's transaction volume hits $30 trillion, cementing stablecoin dominance
TRON's total transaction volume crossed $30 trillion, driven by stablecoin activity and growing institutional access.
StarkWare's AI-assisted challenge cut quantum-safe Bitcoin cost estimates by 79%, from $320 to about $66, after faster RTX 4090 benchmark runs.
Quantum-safe Bitcoin transactions have become far less expensive after a seven-day coding contest. Developers working with AI tools brought the projected cost down 79%, from $320 to approximately $66.
StarkWare's approach is an experimental, emergency-oriented measure for a hypothetical future danger, rather than something that will change ordinary wallets right away.
QSB, short for Quantum-Safe Bitcoin, relies on hash-based cryptography to shift eligible Bitcoin within the current consensus framework, with no protocol change or soft fork required. The method targets a particular danger: a future quantum computer powerful enough could take exposed public keys, work out the private keys, and spend the coins.
No machine of that kind is available today, yet the threat is seen by developers as one to prepare for over the long term, a contingency they consider worth planning around.
On August 26, StarkWare mined the first QSB transaction on the Bitcoin mainnet, using MARA's Slipstream service. The construction effort consumed around 3,100 GPU-hours, with computing alone estimated at $320.
The expense made the technique hard to use in practice. On September 16, StarkWare began the Quantum-Safe Bitcoin Optimization Challenge, with Yukon Research and Eigen Labs participating as partners and more than $20,000 in prizes on offer.
Two computational snags were the focus. Pinning involves searching for a valid transaction commitment, whereas subset selection identifies the correct set of components. Sixty-two accepted entries, a large number of them developed with AI coding tools, delivered about a sixfold speedup on the same hardware.
Benchmarks on an RTX 4090 GPU showed a clear shift: pinning throughput climbed from around 146 million verified candidates per second to above 880 million. As a result, the projected cost fell from $320 to roughly $66 to $67.
That figure still lacks confirmation from a second-mined transaction, and the calculation only includes GPU compute, not network fees.
StarkWare's contest is part of a bigger, quickly evolving landscape. In August 2024, NIST completed its official post-quantum cryptography standards, with a 2035 migration deadline set for federal agencies. Google gave itself an internal 2029 goal.
Published in March 2026, a Google Quantum AI research paper heightened urgency further, lowering by around 20x the estimated qubits required to crack Bitcoin's cryptography. The change moved some expert forecasts from decades away to the early 2030s.
Separately, Bitcoin's developer community reacted with BIP-360, a quantum-resistant address proposal that made it to testnet in March 2026, drawing more than 50 miners.
Not all experts see the same level of urgency, though. Dan Boneh, a Stanford cryptographer who co-authored Google's March paper, cautioned that a hurried shift might bring a catastrophic bug into play more readily than a real quantum attack would.
That debate is the context for StarkWare's challenge: a single, narrowly scoped, low-risk emergency instrument developed while the wider industry argues over the pace at which Bitcoin's core cryptography ought to change.
