Evan Hubinger, an employee at Anthropic, garnered 30 million views on X on Wednesday after forecasting a greater than 10% chance that artificial intelligence will wipe out humanity within a decade.
Prior to sounding the alarm on superintelligent AI going rogue, Hubinger spent time at Ripple, one of the oldest firms in the cryptocurrency space.
In response to Hubinger's viral post, Galaxy Research's Alex Thorn took a jab, drawing on his connection to Ripple and the XRP market. The current XRP price remains below its January 2018 high.
Jacob is correct here—we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to. https://t.co/QAIHiFP3QZ

Hubinger's resume indicates he worked in Ripple's software engineering department. Years later, the company sought financing at up to a $50 billion valuation, with most of that valuation backed by its corporate XRP holdings.
Hubinger began working at Ripple while still in school, but his resume describes duties far beyond fetching coffee. He claims he “worked on designing Interledger, a trustless system for cross-currency transactions between arbitrary agents.”
Additionally, Hubinger asserts he “wrote a tool to do cryptographically secure wallets for financial institutions.”
His LinkedIn profile also mentions work on the build process for rippled, the server software that underpins parts of the XRP Ledger.
Hubinger now leads Anthropic's alignment stress-testing team. Its mission is to prevent alignment failures in AI models, which in industry terms means AI agents pursuing hidden objectives beyond those specified by humans.
Hubinger subsequently clarified: “To be clear, as we say in our latest Risk Report, I think the risk from present models is low. What I am worried about is superintelligence arising from recursive self-improvement.”
Recursivity refers to the ability of AI to train and generate new AI without human input.
David Schwartz, Ripple's CTO Emeritus, has argued that AI safety regulations could threaten freedom of speech.
Former Ripple Vice President Emi Yoshikawa wrote in August that the risk of AI-induced extinction had become an everyday conversation topic in Silicon Valley.
