AUDUSD oscillates between two key moving averages as traders eye breakout triggers

AUDUSD trades between the 200-day MA at 0.70549 and the 100-hour MA near 0.7025, awaiting a decisive breakout.

During Asian trade, the Australian dollar got a boost against its US counterpart after inflation data came in hot and RBA Governor Michele Bullock struck a hawkish tone, giving buyers fresh impetus. Headline inflation for September accelerated to 4.3% from 4.0%, and Bullock cautioned that price pressures would likely exceed the central bank's forecasts from August. That combination kept the possibility of another interest rate increase very much alive.

The AUDUSD initially climbed in reaction to the fundamental news. But after hitting a key technical target tied to a moving average, the upward momentum faded and the pair reversed lower, heading toward a downside moving average target. From a technical standpoint, that has established the trading boundaries for market participants. A video breaks down the key levels in play and explains the reasoning behind them.

What do price action and technical indicators reveal to traders?

The AUDUSD is currently caught between two technical levels that provide support and resistance for both buyers and sellers.

On the upside, the 200-day moving average at 0.70549 capped the rally. Sellers defended that longer-term benchmark and drove the price lower. However, the subsequent decline also met a floor, with the 100-hour moving average around 0.7025 drawing buying interest.

Buyers had their chance above. Sellers had their chance below. Neither camp has managed to push past the opposing moving average and seize stronger control.

What must buyers accomplish?

Holding above the 100-hour MA near 0.7025 keeps buyers in the short-term fight. But defending support is only half the task. They also need to drive the pair back toward the 200-day MA at 0.70549, clear it, and remain above it.

Until that occurs, the longer-term moving average continues to act as a cap.

What must sellers accomplish?

For sellers, the next move is to push below the 100-hour MA near 0.7025 and keep the price beneath it. That would eliminate the support that halted the decline and tilt the short-term bias more in their favour.

A break that quickly reverses back above the moving average would weaken that bearish signal.

The trading lesson

Moving averages are valuable because they help define risk and gauge control. Buyers can lean on support. Sellers can lean on resistance. When either boundary is breached, traders need to watch whether the price can sustain the move beyond it.

For now, the path is clear: above 0.70549 gives buyers greater control; below 0.7025 gives sellers greater control. Between those levels, the back-and-forth battle continues.
