Bitcoin sellers regain short-term control as range floor becomes next test

Bitcoin has fallen back below its moving averages, tilting the short-term technical bias toward sellers. The key downside test is now the range floor support.

Yesterday gave bitcoin buyers a brief window of opportunity. More precisely, the price managed to climb above its 100-hour and 200-hour moving averages (currently at $81,686 and $82,082 respectively) and extended to a high of $83,038. The advance, however, stalled before it could reach the next upside target at $84,178.

The price then turned lower, spent some time trading between those two averages, and ultimately broke beneath both. For the past several hours, it has stayed below those levels, shifting the short-term technical picture back in favor of the downside.

The relevant reference levels are currently:

  • 100-hour moving average: $81,687

  • 200-hour moving average: $82,082

Why are these levels important? They serve as a gauge of control and risk. The break above them yesterday gave buyers a chance to generate upside momentum. Their failure to sustain that break, combined with the subsequent drop below both averages, restored sellers to a stronger short-term position.

If the price stays beneath these moving averages, sellers keep that advantage. A recovery above them would begin to weaken the bearish argument.

A bearish bias still requires a support break

Although the technical tilt has shifted lower, sellers still have work ahead of them.

The primary downside obstacle remains the $80,106–$81,183 swing area. This zone has consistently drawn in buyers and helped stop declines since September 18.

Sellers briefly dipped below that area last week, but the move was quickly reversed and met with strong buying.

The sellers had their chance. They failed to take it.

That unsuccessful break carries an important lesson. Trading below a support level does not automatically lead to a sustained move lower. Follow-through from sellers is crucial. When the price swiftly returns above a broken level, it casts doubt on the strength of the selling and gives buyers a reason to defend that area again.

Today's weaker technical bias offers sellers a fresh opportunity. The task now is to convert it into a durable break to the downside.

What would fortify the bearish case?

A sustained move below $80,106, combined with a break of the psychological $80,000 level, would fortify the bearish case.

Below that floor, the next major downside target sits near $76,052. That level marks the 38.2% retracement of the rally from the June 30 low to the September high.

For traders, the broken support zone would then act as a risk reference. If sellers are taking stronger control, any bounces should struggle to reclaim that area. A fast recovery above it would signal that another downside break may be failing.

The initial break creates the opportunity. Remaining below it confirms the sellers' advantage.

Bitcoin remains within the broader consolidation between $80,106 and $87,374. The oscillating price action resembles a coiled spring, with traders waiting for the next decisive push.

Consolidation, however, does not guarantee an immediate breakout or breakdown. Traders can anticipate a bigger swing, but the price action itself must ultimately confirm the direction.

For now, trading below the hourly moving averages gives sellers the advantage. A sustained break of the range floor would add to this bearish lean.

On the other hand, a recovery above $81,687 and then $82,082 would reduce sellers' control and clear the way for another upside probe toward $83,038 and then $84,178.

Trading is about reading the bias, gauging the risk, and recognizing what will alter the technical narrative. The moving averages set the short-term tone. The swing area presents the next hurdle. The price reaction at these levels will help show whether sellers can finally break and run, or if they will have another opportunity and fail to seize it.
