What the BTC/USD chart reveals following the Clarity bill's failure to pass in the Senate
The price of bitcoin briefly dipped below the roughly $76,500 support level that had been in place since September's consolidation started, reaching an intraday low of $74,888 when news emerged that the Clarity legislation had been defeated. That breakdown did not stick. The cryptocurrency has already bounced back to approximately $76,090, nearly unchanged from Wednesday's closing price of $76,174.
The round trip is what matters more, not the initial drop. A news event that could have triggered a much sharper selloff instead produced a short-lived decline and a quick recovery back into the previous trading range, suggesting the market had mostly factored in the bill's failure already rather than treating it as fresh data.
Looking at the bigger picture, the overall pattern remains range-bound. The $82,000-$82,800 area has turned price back twice, once in May and again in early September, keeping a lid on gains so far. The current decline is testing the lower boundary of the range that emerged after the early-September rally from the June-July lows.
Today's daily candle is still forming, so its final shape could still change. A finish above $76,500 would back up the idea of a failed breakdown and keep the range in place. For the breakdown scenario to gain more credibility, price would need to close consistently below that level, not just touch it during the day.
A level that is breached during trading hours and then recovered by the close conveys a very different message than one that remains broken. A wick indicates a level was tested, not that it was rejected by the broader market; for that, you need to see where the price ends up.
