Market cheers slower data center buildout as voters reject expansion
Voters approved 40 of 41 local data center restrictions; Microsoft and Amazon shares rose as the market welcomed a slower buildout.
Crocs shares jumped 25% after a strong Q3 beat, but the holiday quarter and a Pokemon clog drop will test demand.
Shares of Crocs surged over 25% on October 29, following the company's better-than-expected third-quarter results and an upward revision to its guidance. The upcoming Pokemon 30th-anniversary clog lineup, slated for November 16, provides the next indication of consumer demand.
Those quarterly figures are now out. Still, investors are looking for evidence that demand stays resilient during the holiday period, when Crocs expects quicker expansion than it saw in the summer.
According to its results, Crocs posted increases in both revenue and earnings for the quarter, exceeding analyst expectations.
Executives also lifted the full-year profit forecast, attributing the improvement to strength across the company's brands and geographies.
HeyDude, the casual footwear label controlled by Crocs, resumed its sales expansion. At the same time, the Crocs brand was driven by international orders, even as North American revenue declined.
Despite the recent surge, the share price is still near its level from five years back.
The company intends to launch Pikachu and Gengar Classic Clogs as well as a Jigglypuff Platform Clog. The set honours 30 years of Pokemon and follows the Poke Ball clog released in August.
The Pokemon collection is among multiple licensed launches scheduled for November. Upcoming releases also include Harry Potter, Hello Kitty, and Chainsaw Man clogs, with the latter inspired by a Japanese anime franchise. A Peanuts version is set for December.
This schedule is significant for Crocs shares. Management anticipates that fourth-quarter revenue growth will accelerate.
That quarter also covers the S&P 500's traditionally strongest seasonal window. A year earlier, Crocs released its holiday-quarter numbers in mid-February.
Nevertheless, the most recent figures highlighted international demand and fresh designs instead of attributing growth to any one partnership. Consequently, the Pokemon release functions more as a gauge of sentiment than as a direct contributor to earnings.
Pokemon has also emerged as its own market trend. Scarce cards have outperformed Bitcoin and gold, and Polymarket has started card price prediction markets. Coinbase has also entered the space with digital Pokemon card packs that are supported by physical versions.
For Crocs investors, the fourth quarter will reveal whether that appeal extends to shoes.
